Israel bars US congresswomen - with a nudge from Trump

Trump did kind of bale Israel out of a stinky spot.

I can understand Israels hesitation even taking into account the people involved...They must have breathed a sigh of relief when they got that message.

That's an interesting take: Trump intentionally taking the heat for a decision Israel didn't want to undiplomatically make. I can definitely imagine Trump telling Netanyahu, "Don't worry about it. I'll take care of it." Plus, it gives him another perfect opportunity to publicly attack American socialists, socialism being one of the main attack points in his upcoming active campaign.

Trump is making a play for the US Jewish vote - too crude, too obvious, won't work; I suspect that most American Jews would have a 100 point IQ start on the best of Trump's 'base.' ;)

He has a Putin/Kim love affair with Netanyahu to feed (and Netanyahu is probably playing him as hard as Putin and Kim are).

As I posted on the first thread on this subject, I think the congresswoman shouldn't have planned to go there during their election period--that that is too much playing in someone else's domestic affairs (like Netanyahu, incidentally, did by carrying through in coming and addressing Congress during our elections when the U.S. government asked him not to come). I think it's just theater on both sides.
 
If I were Trump, I wouldn't want those two visiting foreign countries either. They might act as if they have some kind of official status. If they want to travel on their own dollar, that's their own business, and the PM would be under no obligation to see them.

Oh, Lord, there you go with your idiocy again, Box. They both do have official status. They are congresswomen. They have status and votes on appropriating money that has helped prop Israel up for seventy years. One of them, I think, is even on the House Foreign Affairs committee [Yes, Ilhan Omar is on both the Foreign Affairs and Budge committees, both with oversight of relations with foreign countries, including Israel]. It's directly her job to visit foreign countries in an official status.

They actually were not visiting Israel according to their own press releases. They were visiting the occupied territories of East Jerusalem to drum up support for BDS movement with Hamas supporters. They had no plans to visit or talk with any Israeli officials. Israel was never gonna let these agitators in. Instead, the Israelis weaponized the trip against The Squad.

It was a total set up by Netanyahu peeps. He could have denied them visas quietly a long time ago when their peeps first floated this trip and it would have been no big story.

But Netanyahu wanted to gift his pal, Trump, a PR coup, make these bitches wriggle like real chumps and lose face. Get the NYT & MSNBC foaming at the gills. So the Israelis let Trump do his usual twitter shitposting and take all the glory and heat for this.

Meanwhile, the Main Stupid Media (Trump's bitches) give all of America another frontpage opportunity to revisit the anti-Semitism of The Squad sucking oxygen away from the Dem's case for Trump as a racist Nazi. The Normals out there in Podunk, Flyover State are scratching their heads: who are the real Jew-hating Nazis? Hmmmm.

I know you Americans don't do mass psychology or propaganda well, but this is a classic beaut for Trump. The evil stable genius SOB sure knows how to play the media.

Their job is not to travel the world and act as unofficial ambassadors.
Their sole responsibility is to represent their districts.

So far, what they have told us in word and deed in that their districts
are hotbeds of anti-semetic attitude and feeling.

Why would Israel treat them with any courtesy?
They're going there to shore up Palestinian morale...

If a Republican freshman congressman during the Obama administration went on a fact finding tour to Europe and only met with Tommy Robinson, Geert Wilders and Marie Le Pen would you be ok with that? They were not going to meet with any Israeli officials only terrorists and their supporters.

They are no serving the U.S interest only islamic terrorist ones.
 
Well darn. Do you mean to say that our two favorite Palestinian terrorist supporting congresswomen were j u s t about to vote in favor of a nice spending package for Israel? I kind of had the idea that they might have been moderately opposed to that idea.

Speaking of cognitive dissonance, now that we have drill baby drill darway into energy Independence it sure seems obvious that the anti-israel contingent should have been supporting that strategy a long time ago. At this point I don't see how what happens in the Middle East really matters to us at all, other than the fact that instability in that region might cause energy disruptions to other portions of the world that we trade with. On the other hand will be a tremendous boon to American oil producers if it got ugly in the Middle East again.

It’s worth noting Netanyahu’s government barely has the approval of an Israeli majority. OTOH, he’s more popular than Trump.
