Historical settings

Not sure if this is the right place to post but I’d like to hear from other authors (and readers) who are into historically based erotica, such as Victorian or classical world etc. I enjoy pm’s too.

I have written some as oggbashan and also the Laundry Tales as jeanne_d_artois

I shall have a look. I’ve had a go at a couple of Victorian scenarios

I like writing in historical settings, but it's a lot of work.

A Valentine's Day Mess features (starting in part 2) a brother and sister who tell each other tales from their shared ancestral memory, with the tales going back in time progressively. The stories start in El Salvador with each story going back one generation, then in part 3 the first story takes them back to about 1800 (still in El Salvador) and the second story takes them to central Spain in the 1540's. Part 4 will be in Spain at about 1000CE.

One Night in Gormaz uses some of my research for part 4 of A Valentine's Day Mess. The story is a fantasy, but the setting is real, and in north-central Spain at 1000CE.

Historical Fiction

First and foremost, to take on the challenge of writing historical fiction it should be a piece you are writing for yourself. For the story to be done well, it is a lot of hard work and the lack of the coveted red H may not reflect the time you put forth.
Personally, I like to read and write historical fiction. I have discovered that the historical stories I have written do not contain as much sex as the others. There is more depth to the story than sex.
I enjoy the research and finding all the pieces of the puzzle to make it a story.
The caliber of author’s and readers on this site will make it worthwhile to post here when the story is complete for their feedback.

I did an Ancient Rome story once. I wouldn’t say I researched it “extensively,” though I did want to get the details right.

I’ve got a deep reverence for history. It’s my field, professionally, and I’m one of those tiresome people who can’t easily enjoy a movie if there are historical inaccuracies.

I write extensively in historical settings. Most of them are GM, though. I have a chaptered one coming up in September that from the Tripoli pirate wars period. Ancient China after that.

Try my “One Night in Xanadu” (12th century Mongol Khanate) or “Tales from Old Shanghai”, set in late 1930s Shanghai. “Midnight in the Villa Diodati” is early 18th century with Byron, Shelley and companions....

IMHO anything set 1901-2001 is recent history and I've many there; older is vintage, then ancient. My pre-1900 tales are either US Olde West, vaguely Medieval, or time-slipping in varied eras, none too detailed. I've rough plans for tales of 1900-1940 in Hollywood and Europe but only a few sketches in ancient / classical settings. No pirates yet.

Which sort of history do we want? Somebody's recorded history? Varied myth histories? Histories of the conquerors? An alt.history to fit our ideology? Any convenient history we've picked up from fictive books, films, plays, tracts?

I've been cooking a tale of a 1910-era flying Arizona ranch girl, an active pilot in WWI and after. I must fit her storied exploits into real history. Another story covers a US expat in Europe circa 1903-06. I can finesse (lie about) enough history to make that plausible. I don't know Victoriana so I don't do Victoriana.

I have two stories right now that have historical backgrounds- one is 'The Great Khan', which deals with the Mongols becoming an empire. It's sort of an alt-history, since it does not feature Temujin, but my own character Boldbator, khan of the Tengger clan. It's far and away my most violent story.

There's also my comedy series 'Time Rider', which features a dopey teenager and his physics teacher using a time machine to have sex and cause trouble through the ages. This has led to weird shenanigans such as Mark being condemned to death in imperial Rome and fighting for his life in the Colosseum, and Becky (his teacher) finding occasion to kick Cardinal Richelieu in the nuts while being held hostage in the Louvre under King Louis XIV.

Few things as amusing as a drunk, pissed-off blonde physics teacher shrilling "I KICK YOU IN THE NUTS, RICHELIEU!!!"

She also might have shot Porthos.

I love, love LOOOOOOOOVE fucking with history. :D

Those are the only history ones for now. I've got others in the works.

Thanks guys I’ll have to read some of these. I’ve dabbled in some Victoriana which was quite fun to write, I plan to do some more. I might try my hand at the Ancient world too at some point, plenty of inspiration!

This is a bit of a tangent, but anyone tackled alternate history?
I'd love to do that. I've long thought about what if one seemingly little change causes widespread ripples in the timeline. For example, what if Napoleon never marched into Russia because Joséphine "needed" him at home? Then, he doesn't lose 3/4 of his army. Then, the allies do not defeat him. Europe is unified and follows Napoleonic Code (including women's suffrage, ban on slavery and slave trading, and equal rights clauses) 100 years sooner. That one little change, and there is no WWI, no WWII, no Spanish American War, vastly reduced colonization and exploitation of colonies, British domination never happens. Without separate French, Belgian, and Dutch colonial empires, Haiti is a prosperous land. Indonesia, Philippines, West Africa, and Caribbean nations gain independence under Napoleonic Code and the protection of France as opposed to being pillaged by France and others. The USA doesn't become a world power (at least not in the 1900s).

One little thing - One decision that goes the other way, and we live in a completely different world.

As another example, what if the Eastern Roman Empire never fell, and we are all subjects of the Holy Roman Empire to this day? The dark ages never happen. The Renaissance isn't needed because the economic and cultural "reforms" happened 500 years earlier, and knowledge was never lost so didn't need to be rediscovered. We are 500 to 1000 years more technologically advanced in 2019.

Take an opposite example: What if the Ottoman Turks were not defeated at the Battle of Vienna in n 1683? All of Europe, half of Asia, half of Africa, and in all probability, the entire Western Hemisphere becomes culturally Ottoman. It would be necessary to be castrated to advance to high ranks in the military (the practice somehow prevented military coups - some Chinese Dynasties had the same practice). Vast numbers of powerful men might openly keep harems, and half of all men are castrated at birth because there would be no wives available to them anyway. It might be like the "Handmaidens Tale" for real. The world is 1000 years more technologically advanced in 2019...

First, you would love Eric Flint's Ring of Fire universe. Second the "what if's is exactly why I like alt history. The universe that I am currently exploring break point is one where the 13th Amendment was viewed very differently coupled with some Supreme Court decisions that decriminalized incest between consenting adults. https://www.literotica.com/stories/memberpage.php?uid=4605551&page=submissions

I have read most of Eric Flint's novels about the modern West Virginia town transported to 1630s Thuringia/Germany. I think he got some details wrong bout the Austrians and particularly about Westphalia (another future German state). His United States of Europe, handling of the 30 years war, Protestant Reformation, and Swedish Imperial expansion are delightful. My son recently checked the entire series out of the library and has been reading them like a Netflix Binge.

I know Eric slightly, I fear he may not have too many more stories to tell in this life as he is battling cancer :( Glad you like him.

I try not to meet my favorite authors anymore. :(

- I met Douglas Adams on a Florida vacation - he is missed.
- I met Isaac Asimov at a publisher's party in honor of Nick Hornby, author of "About a Boy", "High Fidelity", and I think "The Commitments". I didn't meet Hornby because I was stuck in a hotel room with a 1 week old and a 3 year old. Spouse was supposed to relieve me so I could go downstairs and join the party. It never happened. I met Asimov because his room was next to mine, and I literally bumped into him while walking up and down the hallway with a toddler in a stroller and a baby at my breast. Asimov is missed.
- I spent an evening chatting in a bar with Robert Lynn Asprin. He is missed.
- I met Piers Anthony Dillingham Jacob. I hung out with his younger daughter all day at a convention. He was hospitalized right after.
- I've sat in George R.R. Martin's kitchen a couple of times and have eaten a few meals in restaurants with him. The company I founded licensed some of his intellectual property, and we negotiated face to face. As far as I can tell, his writing productivity fell off a cliff shortly after. Also, I don't think his wife likes me :( She left one dinner early with no explanation.
- I met Roger Zelazny in the same bar I met Robert Asprin. They spent and hour or so telling "I can one up that" fibs to each other. It turned out that Zelazny once lived in a house on the same street as mine. He is missed.
- I attended a guest lecture with Erma Bombeck. She is missed.
- My father was the first editor to recommend publishing Lois McMaster Bujold. He read slush piles as a side gig while he was in the Air Force. She was the gem of the bunch, and he stayed in touch with her until he died. She's been my all time favorite author for several years. She bumped Jane Austen down a notch. Anyway, her health took a down turn, and her productivity has suffered. I'm sad for her, but damnit I want more books!

I have attended a lot of Authors Conventions for the fun of it. My spouse's best friend from high school was an executive buyer and reviewer for Borders - that resulted in meeting some authors because we had a "mutual acquaintance". One of my college professors knew Steven King well and had him give a talk to our class. I didn't think King's work would interest me, but I have since read all 58 of his novels under the King name and his pseudonym, Bachman. Personally, with the exception of the movie, "Christine" which didn't do the book justice, I like the movie versions of his books better than the text versions.

Gosh - I've met so many others, but my mind is drawing a blank right now. I have dinner simmering in a crockpot, and my nose/stomach is telling me to get off the computer.

[edit]

[Oh! one more] I had a brief but wonderful email correspondence with Sir Terence Pratchett . Piers Anthony indirectly put me in touch with Pratchett by forwarding an email. Pratchett replied to me directly cutting Anthony out of the conversation :p

[another edit]
I also know my academic colleagues with books in the same field as mine. We meet regularly at technical conferences. We have the same editors. We each have a "signature look" so we can find each other easily in crowds. One wears a ten gallon hat. Another wears a cravat. Tim O'Reilly attends most of the conferences his company sponsors. He doesn't need a prop because he is so tall that he is always visible in a crowd. One other fellow nerd I make a note to hang out with is readily identifiable by the woman on his arm. She is an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10. Ethnically, she is half German Ubermensch and half Native American. I recommend the combination.

[yet another edit]
There was the parade of "fetish" authors through my parents home when I was a kid. Back then, smut was published in cheap paperback or even staple bound volumes sold primarily at news stands and some drug stores (I have no idea why drug stores). Anyway, the publishes paid 6 cents per word back in the early 80s, and that was the best around when it came to freelance work for hire. My father wrote a dozen or more stories that were in anthologies with other authors. The publisher had a list of very specific fetishes and commissioned stories to hit the "sweet spot". I've only read a few of my father's smutty works, but one was about naked women who ride horses bare back and have sex with men improbably while on horseback. Basically, the men rode standing in the stirrups, and the women rode the men while supported on their trusty steed's back. That seemed like a laser focussed fetish to me, but they apparently sold well.

Love his stories. Him, David Drake, John Ringo, Tom Kratman and Lois Bujold are my favourite SF authors. Baen Books is the greatest.
