I think everyone agrees his plan makes sense. Immigrants must show proof of self sufficiency. They must be able to speak English. They must be healthy. I think we can all agree that there needs to be reasonable limitations on immigration and the American taxpayer can't be expected to support immigrants who have no way of supporting themselves. This policy does not apply to refugees or asylum seekers. My friends on the extreme left (who favor open borders, but don't have the guts to say so) are against this policy. They represent a tiny minority, though. I just think we are at a time in history where we have enough social problems within our present population. Our economy is different from the last great wave of immigration. And let's face it. The burden of supporting indigent new immigrants will be borne by the lower and middles classes, not the ultra wealthy in the liberal's wet dream.

As usual, your premises suck from the beginning. No, everyone doesn't agree. No, it isn't at the doctorate level where the United States needs immigrant blood. It's at the services levels.

If they don't have the "guts" to say it to you, are you sure they're your friends?

Sure! they're very nice people. When we talk, they'll describe an essentially unrestricted immigration policy. But when I ask if they advocate open borders, they deny it,

That's because "open borders" has now become this catchall rhetorical phrase used by the Right to provoke fears of World War Z zombie bum-rushes against crumbling fortress walls.

What I believe your friends would like and what they probably wish you could understand without them having to over-explain is the application of sensible and humane border control that doesn't base itself off knee-jerk xenophobia and racism.

Unfortunately, the current administration of America is running on xenophobic and racist groupthink energies, so here we are.

There ya' go. Humane. Define that. I can't take in every stray kitten I come across. Is that cruel?

Saying you can't take in every stray kitten is a reflection or assessment of your ability due to means, time and available space.

It has nothing to do with how you treat them when you come across them.

Because you're too lazy to work?

I don't mean to come off snarky, but you want us to reject them nicely?
(if we have to)

That's because it's only rightists who give open borders any serious consideration--and that's only to lie about it as something that all leftists want--like you're doing.

How many stray kittens do you know who are going to pick apples off the tree and get them to your table? If all else fails, try common sense.

Turning them away doesn't mean making them feel less than human.

There are always better ways of doing things, ways to improve the things we do, even the things we (hopefully) dislike doing when in positions of power, which is denying others of the things they would want, like or love.

Employers have to fire the workers underneath them sometimes, regardless of station. There's graceful ways of doing that and then there's absolutely shitty ways of doing that. The way they go about doing that depends on the kind of person they choose to be.

There's a way America's choosing to be right now...and it ain't graceful, my guy.

It isn't nice at all and it certainly looks bad. I also think our country is in an extremely difficult position now, and probably for the last decade. My default is to give our country the benefit of the doubt. I also understand That because we liked President Obama we looked the other way when his Administration did many of the same things President Trump's Administration is doing. We don't like President Trump.

For over a century, the public charge ground of inadmissibility has been part of our nation’s immigration laws. President Trump has delivered on his promise to the American people to enforce long-standing immigration law by defining the public charge inadmissibility ground that has been on the books for years,” said USCIS Acting Director Ken Cuccinelli. “Throughout our history, self-sufficiency has been a core tenet of the American dream. Self-reliance, industriousness, and perseverance laid the foundation of our nation and have defined generations of hardworking immigrants seeking opportunity in the United States ever since. Through the enforcement of the public charge inadmissibility law, we will promote these long-standing ideals and immigrant success.”
