A Fire Kills 14 Crew Members Onboard Russian Navy Sub

"(NPR)... R ussia's Defense Ministry said Tuesday that 14 submariners were poisoned by fumes and died after a fire broke out aboard a navy deep water research vessel. The fire began while the crew was surveying the seabed in Russian territorial waters on Monday.

NPR's Lucian Kim reports Russian President Vladimir Putin has dispatched the defense minister to lead the investigation of the accident.

Putin described the stricken vessel as "an unusual submarine" and said seven of those killed were high-ranking naval officers.

Some Russian media outlets, citing military sources, said it was a secret nuclear-powered submersible that can operate thousands of feet deeper than regular submarines..."

My father's cousin was a nuke sub sailor. They had an accident and as senior P.O. he was the last out of the compartment. His hair turned white over night and he lost an eye to radiation. He later passed away to cancer. The type ship I served on had a fire (several of that type were lost to fire) and an officer and four snipes were lost as they were cut off from the ladder and took shelter in the control room, but it filled with smoke. Later they put an escape tunnel up from the room thru the funnel to top side on all ships of our type.

If the units involved in this don't get unit citations and the various heroes get proper awards there is something really wrong with us. They risk their lives to safe our people from the drugs that some of our politicians want brought into this country. They are real Americans not the fake members of Congress, news, etc. who take the side of drug lords and other criminals.

These sailors and the border patrol are our first line of defense.
