Impeachment is coming — and here’s why the August recess could tip the scales

There really isn’t any serious dispute that it happened. The question is whether the government is doing everything in its power to stop it from happening again. Unfortunately, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is blocking legislation designed to stop it.

And on Thursday, President Trump made it clear that he will do absolutely nothing to stop any further electoral cyber-attacks from happening:

As for the fact that Trump will not be convicted in the Senate, presidential candidate Julián Castro explained exactly how to handle that in the CNN debate on Wednesday: “If Mitch McConnell lets him off, we’re going to say, sure. They impeached him in the House, his friend Mitch McConnell — ‘Moscow Mitch’ — let him off the hook.”

To that end, four grassroots groups — MoveOn, Need to Impeach, Stand Up America and Indivisible — are kicking in with a new initiative called Impeachment August, in which they exhort their members and others to find town halls and other events during the August recess to demand that their representatives support impeachment.

If Democrats believe that the only way to hold Trump accountable for his crimes is to beat him at the ballot box, impeachment may be one of the very best tools they have to make sure that happens.

The impeachment enquiry in the House has, of course, already started--in six committees. Congressman Meeks gave a good reason on TV last night not to call it an official enquiry. Now it's going on in six committee--six simultaneous continuous cuts of the sword on multiple fronts where Trump obviously is corrupt, criminal, and treasonouos. If it becomes official, it has to all go into one committee--the Judiciary. Better perhaps to keep to the broader cuts of the swords in public. The point is to take the vote when the votes are there and pin the Republicans in the Senate down on their vote for the scumbag. Take the vote before the 2020 elections for use in the campaigns.

“As details emerge, this manifesto, this screed, whatever you want to call it, you’re going to be increasingly be convinced that today’s shooting was an act of terrorism,” Figliuzzi said.

“Let’s understand something, this administration that we’re in needs to come out and intervene. What do I mean by that? If you’re on the Islamic extremism side, you’ve got that cleric radicalizing that young person online. He’s the father figure, giving the license, he’s facilitating and enabling. What we need is the similar figure — the president — to come out and say, once this is confirmed, ‘I stand for something other than hate, I rebuke all the hatred going on here.’ Until we see the person do that, that’s giving the license, we’ll continue to have this hate problem,” Figliuzzi said.

“About half the FBI’s terrorism cases right now, as we speak, are actually this stuff, the domestic stuff,” he added. “That is extremely disturbing.”

‘This is on you’: Democrats demand McConnell immediately call Senate back to vote on universal background checks

Progressive senators on Sunday said they would welcome an opportunity to return to Washington, D.C. in the midst of Congress’s August recess, in order to vote on gun control reform following two mass shootings in the course of a day.

Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) demanded that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell call the Senate back into session to vote on H.R. 8 and H.R. 1112, the background check bills passed by the Democratic-led House in February. The bills would require background checks on all firearm sales across the country, and strengthen existing checks.

“The House of Representatives has passed background check legislation,” Brown told Jake Tapper on CNN. “The Senate could meet tomorrow. I hope that Sen. McConnell would bring the Senate back tomorrow and pass the background check bill and send it to the president and the president must sign it. Period.”

Republicans block effort to save the Great Lakes from invasive Asian carp

Republicans sat on a report for months about how to block Asian carp from our nation’s Great Lakes, but now environmentalists are hoping Congress approves money this year to fund preliminary work for a $778 million plan to stop the fish at a dam near Joliet, Ill.

Todd Semonite, the commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is recommending the plan which includes building a channel with additional electric barriers, flushing lock systems and using underwater speakers to bombard the fish with noise.

An appropriations bill approved by the House in June, H.R.2740, contains a $10 million increase in the Corps investigations account that could be used to fund preliminary work on the proposal. The bill passed 226 to 203 with all the Republicans and seven Democrats voting against it.

The American Waterways Operators, which represents the barge industry, gave $108,500 in campaign contributions to the representatives who voted against the appropriations bill. The Senate, where the barge industry’s PAC has donated $50,500 will now consider the bill.

As the county reeled over two mass shootings over the weekend left at least 29 people dead and 53 injured, several Republicans lawmakers — including President Donald Trump — boldly condemned white supremacy, something that many prominent right-wing politicians had been loath to do for so long.

But his statements are prompting charges of hypocrisy because the city claims the president’s political campaign owes an outstanding debt from a February campaign rally — specifically, more than half a million dollars.
