I had never really thought about it before. I mean, I long knew we, as women, play by a different set of rules than men, and most were clueless. But, him being a black man, he plays by a different set of rules too. He was actively taught he might appear dangerous to someone, and actively taught not to approach someone in an isolated area. Thus having me come to him to diffuse risk to himself. This was long before I had ever heard the term white privilege, but it was the day I truly realized that women weren't the only ones playing by a different set of rules. I had just never thought about the fact that black mothers might be teaching sons how to not appear like a threat. It was an eye opener.

It was a valuable realization. Going from being a minority and under privileged, to where I would be way back behind the starting line on the privilege walk, in a world where I know police harassment, where I know to be afraid for my physical safety from police, to where I know to blend while shopping, to where we are taught to see the dangers and how to handle but look more threatening. That outside my 46000 square mile city, things are very different but very much the same. Similar danger points but very different reasons and very different strategies. Very enlightening.
