Apparently (yes, I use that word a lot), David Letterman enjoyed having the con artist on his show. As David put it:
Granted, when Letterman asked the con artist in 1987 if he was worth $1 billion, the con didn't explicitly answer. The answer was, "Perhaps" https://img-9gag-fun.9cache.com/photo/a9Kw6zL_460s.jpg
Since that time, varying estimates (since the con artist refuses to provide proof for his lies) have shown the con artist to be worth only a tick above $1 billion. However, in a forthcoming book, white supremacist Steve Bannon, who was briefly a personal aide to the con artist, has said the con artist is definitely not worth $1 billion, but rather $50 million:
For Letterman, there is still one burning question which, if given the opportunity, he would ask the con artist:

"I think he just liked being on TV and he was an excellent guest for somebody I could just beat up on and smack around and stuff," Letterman said. "He's just like a goofball ... a bonehead."

In the book, Bannon predicts Trump’s presidency will fall after investigations into his finances reveal to his supporters that he’s not some incredible self-made billionaire, but a crook. “This is where it isn’t a witch hunt—even for the hard-core, this is where he turns into just a crooked business guy, and one worth $50m instead of $10bn,” Bannon is quoted as saying. “Not the billionaire he said he was, just another scumbag.”
For Letterman, there is still one burning question which, if given the opportunity, he would ask the con artist:
"Were I ever to get the chance to talk to him in person, and you know I won't live long enough for that to happen," he continued. "I would say, 'When did you become a goon?' You know? 'When did that happen? You used to just be like a guy.'"
