The "Volunteer Editor" Program has been redesigned

I can't comment on the functionality but it definitely does look pretty!

Can't wait for the rest.

I've got to admit, i like the current layout of Lit the way it is, regardless of how old it looks. It's simple and perfectly clear. I guess I'm in the minority on that based on forum comments and articles written about this site.

But then again, I used to hate the New Control Panel, but now I love it. So who knows, I'm sure it'll grow on me.

I like what I’m used to. I’m not big on redesign but now that the old control panel has gone and I’m used to the new one, I like it. And the site does need a good facelift

... I like that it sorts by the Editor's last update.

The VE list has always been sorted by last update, but the new alphabetical sort is a nice enhancement. It makes it easy to see if a VE you may have worked with in the past has withdrawn from the program. Thanks to the technical staff for implementing this change.

However it might be tricky to see if the [Contact Editor] function is working reliably now. I guess if you only use that button and you get a response, you would know.

I wonder if those VEs from 2003 back on the last page wonder why no one’s asking for their help these days?

Really!? I don't remember that at all. After I wrote my first story a couple of years ago, I spent hours on the VE search tool trying to find someone who's profile wasn't more than two years old. I came in here for advice, and was told to give up and just post on the Editor's Forum. That worked like a charm. (Thanks again, HeyAll.) Maybe in my excitement, I missed something big and obvious.

As I feared, the new panel doesn't cut it for a basic need I actually use the author's page for. My story lists take significantly longer now to open up than before and they are in pages, each taking time to open up and not scrollable as before to quickly get to a story listing. I've abandoned my 1,000 plus account simply because I can't quickly get to story listings now as I was able to do before. The other razzle dazzle add ons are fine, but I don't use them daily. Quick access of individual story listings is something I try to do daily.

I haven't taken the time to check out functionality, but I like the way the new page looks. It's a huge upgrade. I think it's essential that the site update itself and stay ahead of its competition in whatever way it can, including the web page design.

I contacted a VE awhile back via the new CP ( I have been using the new CP for quite awhile and like it). As I understand it, I was to get a confirmation email that I had made the request to the VE. That confirmation email never came to me, nor did the VE respond with either a yes or not interested. ( PS: Lit has my current email and I get PM notices all the time just fine.)

It's actually easier to single out a story in the new control panel, regardless of what page it's on.

Click in the search box, and start typing. It will narrow down your list by whatever you type. Doesn't have to be the first word, either. So, for example, I can find my story "Nude Holly Day" and "Holly Jolly Christmas" by typing "Holly"

If you wish to leave the page open and regularly refresh what you've searched, you can click the tab where it says XXX published, and that will refresh the tab with the search parameters you've established. Perfect for checking a newly published story.

EDIT: Well, crap. The second part is no longer working. It was the last time I tried it... Guess I need to put in a bug report for that.

Still, refreshing and repeating the search ( you don't have to wait for it to completely load your list before you start typing ) is reasonably quick, and an exact title will leave you with only the story you're looking for.

I think it’s more catch up with the competition, whatever the competition is.

Thanks, but the former way was quicker and less complicated. Not a problem to have "fixed," in my world. I don't need to endlessly "fix" the look while ignoring cleaning up the nonfunctional elements on the site (just to make sponsors/potential buyers think there are function functioning here that aren't?). My fix was to abandon the account.

Updating the appearance of the site is secondary. The primary and critical goal of the redesign is to make it mobile friendly. Google is steadily altering its search algorithms, and sites without completely mobile friendly design are going to lose traffic/ranking.

There's a reason everything else has to take a backseat to getting the new pages finished, tested, debugged, and live. That reason is the Juggernaut that is Google.

Looking at the number of pages, as of today there are 118 of them. Moving through those pages is difficult at best. I'd like to see more editors per page, or even better, to scroll through the entire list using a scroll bar.

Whether that's possible nor not, depends on the web designer and software they're working with. However, those are my druthers.

The defunct "functions" on the Web site have nothing to do with mobiles. They are just claimed functionality that doesn't actually exist.

The good thing is with this redesigning and rebuilding we should see that functionality coming back bit by bit

You're forever claiming that this is to defraud potential sponsors, despite the advertisements being consistent for years, and pointing to Lit branded portals ( with a few exceptions )

It doesn't wash.

The biggest flaw in that argument is that Lit's traffic is the only relevant selling point to any sponsor or potential buyer. Nobody is going to give half a rat's ass what peripheral crap is updated when the website is still ranked in the low 2000s for the World, with a million unique hits per day almost entirely on the strength of the story catalog, which is humming along just fine.

I would be willing to wager that Lit has turned down boatloads of unsolicited advertising dollars to maintain the safety of its visitors, because adult ad companies are notorious for malware injection, and Lit has been conscious of that from the beginning.

You have absolutely nothing to back up this assertion beyond your constant repetition of it.

Well, they get a million unique visitors per day, and have for a long time now...

But, the Aspernia and Fern column hasn't been updated since 2006!

Well, that's a deal breaker...

And you're a shill for the Web site. *shrug*

I don't often mention it at all. But, yes, the biggest reason not to clear unfunctional "functions" off the Web site is to make believe they exist. There are only so many reasons why that would be done.

Perhaps the biggest evidence of it is that it sets you and the Web site off when it's suggested.

I was about to point out a way to facilitate this, but - I swear to dog - the functionality that was there yesterday is gone now. While playing around with the new interface, at the bottom where the page navigation has:

< 1 2 3 … 118 >

I saw there was a box to put in a page number so you could jump to that page and not have to scroll one page at a time. (The 5 page at a time scroll << or >> has been eliminated.) You could then quickly jump around to see where, let’s say, the VEs entries that were from one year or less are. Or if you sorted by name, you could estimate where to look for someone whose user name begins with ‘H’ or whatever. I was using this ‘Go to page X’ box quite a lot while trying out the new interface. Where did it go? (or was it a dream?)

Need Help

I have been trying to get someone to edit or take a look at my first attempt at writing a story. I have sent numerous messages in the editors section to no reply.
Any other help would be, well, helpful?
Thanks,
Stray

Ah, good! The [Page #] box has been restored. I was able to quickly find out the earliest VEs who’ve updated since 1/1/18 (on p. 17). I usually don’t bother looking much further back than about 18 months for active VEs.

Post a request on the Editor's Forum. Tell them the category of the story, the word count, if you have a deadline, and what kind of editing you need - grammar, typos, continuity, etc. I've usually had pretty good luck finding an editor that way. Others have not, but it's at least worth a shot.

A glitch - I sent a message to an author who has a gmail account. I use a yahoo account for my email. The message got rejected by gmail because it was considered to be a faux yahoo email message.
