Netflix better than sex?

A talk radio show said that 1 in 4 people now prefer Nexflix to sex and for that reason, fertility is down. Eek! What is wrong with people? I've never watched Neflix. Am I missing something? I don't watch TV either. Sex is much better IMO.

Sex is much better. I figured Netflix should lead to more sex, not less.

Netflix sucks. Terrible options, and they push their own in-house material which isn't that good.

I could never replace sex with t.v. I use the interweb to fill in for the lack of sex. I watch Netflix...because 99% of everything on old t.v. sucks

Oh? It's a local thing. But I do listen to Coast To Coast AM.

What I meant, and should have said, is I don't believe everything I hear on talk radio. It's about like a certain Twitter account, yanno?

I'll put it the best way I can: Most interactive real world activities are better than anything involving staring into an unblinking screen. Sex, basketball, knitting, playing guitar, dining out, cleaning the leaves out of the gutter...

  • Fertility rates may be down, and if so, that's a good thing, because the world is grotesquely overpopulated (Biologically, most species respond to overpopulation by reducing reproduction. Others run off the edge of a cliff into the sea. Seems to me we're more likely to be the latter kind)
  • If there really is in fact a reduction of sexual activity (as opposed to just getting knocked up) its because people are becoming increasingly more isolationist in their activities. Cell phones, texting, sexting, internet, talk radio, Literotica—they're all replacing RL face-to-face (or belly-to-belly) activities.
  • Netflix and the rest just help to fill the emptiness that no face-to-face or belly-to-belly leave in its wake.

The talk radio piece on Netflix vs sex was probably inspired by a recent Wall Street Journal survey, so a little more reliable (although I'd still refer to your Molly Ivan's quote).

I think the idea isn't new. In the past there were stories that when the power went out in, say, NYC, there would be a spike in births 9 months later. Really? That's what inspired so many people to have sex? Like, what were they doing that was so exciting the when the power was on? (Probably watching TV.)

That is true. I have had people siting mere feet from me and messaging me.

Yes. I think it was.

No

Netflix is a good invention (Sorry VHS and DVD owners).

However, It is not better than sex.

I have found that the opportunity window (which can vary by circumstances) can be closed by Netflix more often than it opens it (thank you Cheryl Blossom).

Plan ahead.

If it's an emotional flick night and the topic is cancer or some other emotional roller coaster (missing children, apocalypse) the mood can be unchangeable. Favorite character dead? So will be your sex night. No amount of weed, booze, lingerie can keep your mind off the movie or episode. Do it before you roll the episode.

If not emotional distress the time window also closes. "One more episode" means we are flying by the "make up off" jammy window. If sex were an option my agreement to consume another hilarious episode of F is for Family probably diminished my opportunity 95%.

Shows like True Blood, Outlander, Thrones and others occasionally have the opposite effect. If Jamie and Claire are getting down, we might might be also.

If Sookie Stackhouse is tag teaming Bill and Eric it's good news for me.

Honestly, when Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell) is turning out men's lights and my wife is cheering it makes me close my window. I wonder what she is thinking about me.

It's all about the opportunity window.

It's interesting that the three sex-inspiring shows you mention are not on Netflix. Might it be that this is more insidious than we've been thinking and Netflix is actively trying to reduce the amount of sex people are having?

I was figuring that Netflix is a generic for all mainstream streaming media. Just like Xerox was the generic for plain paper copiers forever ago.

I think that all the streaming services are foolish not to include some adult content. I mean you can see a million murders a day on most of their content, but hardly any creation events. Ending life appeals to them more than starting it. New customers being created are in the best interest of the shareholders. All day.

^^^ This!!

I had Netflix once. Even at $9.99 a month there was enough content of interest to make it worthwhile.

Sex is way better than Netflix.
