I'm not talking high-end or niche retail here, I'm talking box-store volume retail or similar setting, and for the purposes of this (hopefully) conversation, the merchandising of big-ticket items, not local farmer's market produce...
Let's say that you are selling automobiles or large appliances, the kinds of things that people expect to hold on to for, let's say, eight years (and you want their continued repeat business when the new models hit the showroom floor).
One of the immediate ways to cut down on sales is to 'judge the book by the cover.'
So maybe they're wearing a Yankees jersey and you're a Mets fan, you put that behind you. Maybe they're wearing sandals with socks and you wouldn't be caught dead in white after Labor Day. You overlook that. Maybe they're wearing a MAGA hat and it clashes with your Hope and Change teeshirt preference, but you don't immediately show them the door. Their money is always the same color as yours.
Another thing you can't do is tell the customer, this is the car for you (e.g., Chevy/domestic); you'd have to be a moron to even be looking at that model (e.g., Ford/import). You never make your product look better by attacking another product. It might be what their father drove and they have a soft spot for it.
If a customer comes in and says, I like that microwave, it says 'popcorn' in really large letters, you don't tell them exactly how ignorant they are because even though it doesn't say it in big bold letters, the model next to it also has a popcorn setting, in addition to even more settings at a comparative cost. You try to politely explain the choices before them. You don't second-guess their choice of color, you don't politely ask them to try the store down the street.
Yet somehow, with so many, we're willing to make that mistake when it comes to supporting a party and candidate.
You don't agree with us on policy. We don't want your vote. You're stupid.
You don't have the same education. We don't want your vote. You're an idiot.
You chose one of 'those' career paths. We don't want you vote. You're lower caste.
You simply will not adopt our ideas of morality. We don't want your vote. You're a hater.
HEY! WAIT A SECOND STUPID! WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T YOU VOTE FOR US?
DON'T YOU KNOW THAT WE HAVE NOTHING BUT YOUR BEST INTERESTS AT HEART???
