OK, since this seems the place for lonely tunes... there's my private theory of the back story behind 2016 POTUS election, obtained and proven solely by watching tar stains on a damaged chimney. It may place a lot of intelligence where there are none.

In short: it was Russians among others, but not the way it is sold, and they spoiled the game for everyone.

1) Massive disinformation campaign orchestrated by Russians is very real and goes back over two decades by now.

It may seem a long digress, but I have to go over some history on this. It really started as extreme free-mindedness following the crash of USSR and communist regime: unfunded bored academics documented their delirium musings and tried to sold that as alternative science. There were buyers. And then there were ideological fights, especially about history, with was (and still is) politicised to the extreme in the region.

Soviet regime was a regime of lies (Orwell described it very accurately actually, especially considering he did it without first hand experience), and it did build on a long tradition behind it, going back to Ivan the Terrible the book burner (among other atrocities). There was and still is a lot of people that believe in Soviet historical mythology on a holy book level; confronted with objective facts part of them are forced to admit there is no one true history for everyone.

So in Russia, we talk about society that have no one true history, no one true science, no one true system of rights, no one true morality. Being Russia, it had to be taken under control, and it was, the second attempt at democracy in Russia survived a bit longer than the first, but ended when Yeltsin was sidetracked by his chosen heir -- Putin and his goons, and very very dark ideologues behind them (Putin is a progressive liberal in comparison to types that sit in his kitchen and whisper in his ear). Now they have State Committee for Fight Against Alternative Science. If you think it is convulated name for moder day inquisition, you're right. But I digress. The point is, they couldn't eradicate the chaos, instead they embraced it.

Modern Russia have no official ideology, except siege mentality, ethnic chauvinism, xenophobia and homophobia, but keeping their citizens confused, afraid and in constant hate of an officially pointed enemy is still deemed important. So a whole lot of that crazy crap is first and foremost for domestic use, but it exports well.

Russia have exported state agencies backed conspiracy theories since at least eighteenth century (if you didn't know, creation of the original "Protocols of Zion" were ordered by Охранка, czar's secret service).

Now, in last two decades, they have captured and subverted next to every conspiracy theorists society there is and actively back all flavours of anti-science movements. Yes, this on itself is a conspiracy theory, and therefore should be backed by Russian disinformation, it's recursive. If you want to see how it's looking in practice, see Busybody & BotanyBoy, the guys themselves may not even know it, but they're both classic Russian trolls. But I digress.

2) Hillary knew very well how hilarious candidate she was, but wanted to become The Queen Of The Free World very, very, very much. Maybe needed. You will laugh at me now, but I believe some historian will prove this twenty years from now: Donald as presidential candidate emerged as a Democrat's diversion. Hillary wanted opponent more hilarious than herself, one even she could beat to smithereens without even trying, someone truly and completely unelectable. Someone sold Trump as such to her.

3) The Deep Dark Purely Evil Conservative Forces (DDPECF), our OP seems to be truly and reasonably afraid from, picked Trump up and subverted the diversion by selling him as messiah to the Alt Right and white american fascism in general.

4) DDPECF didn't want Trump to win however. Their plan was to let him lose, but just by a hair, and ideally going into endless recounts. Then he would play the wronged victim, found his Trump TV, then used as platform for Alt Right and secretly for DDPECF ideas to spread, and ensure massive red wave in 2020, one from with America wouldn't recover anytime soon, bringing truly very dangerous people to power (no, I have no idea who they are, but I believe they are out there (also remember I'm just reading tar stains)).

5) Russians were very, profoundly afraid of Clinton. Were their fears founded is a whole different topic, but afraid they were.

6) So Russians embraced Trump. It was easy, Trump is an "our guy" from Russian viewpoint on so many levels. His profanity, his style of corruption, his nonsense, it's all very "Russian". And they truly believed he would be someone they could easily talk to and play with. Also they probably highly overestimated true power of POTUS, thinking that owning Trump they will own US.

7) Russians didn't need to allocate a lot of resources to back Trump, the disinformation network was already in place (see (1)).

8) Was there collusion between Russians and Trump, DDPECF and Russians, DDPECF & Russians & Trump (in whatever sub-order) I don't know, there probably was some, but it is secondary at most on the big picture.

9) Above all Russians did see electing Trump as a great practical joke on America, if nothing more. As such they celebrated his victory. Nobody else expected it, not even Trump himself. Nobody wanted it, not even Trump himself. It probably spoiled DDPECF long game badly, and thus the true interests of Russia as well.

Trump will make America great again, IF America will survive Trump intact.
