Not universally the case with SCOTUS hearings. This is all recent tactics and all coming from Dems. It started with Bork. They did it to (Douglas) Ginsburg Thomas and now Kavanaugh.

There has been no similar character assassination by the GOP of a Dem nominee. GOP efforts have focused on judicial temperament and reading tea leaves about how the nominee will likely rule on isdues.

It was Republucans that allowed (Ruth Bader) Ginsberg to defer answering questions that might come before the court. There's no requirement that they allow that. But they did. They then voted for her almost in unison even though they knew that she would rule in ways that they despised.
