Butts.

How many butts get tossed every year?

  • 376 billion cigarettes were consumed in the U.S., 98% are filtered
  • 5.5 trillion cigarettes are consumed globally every year
  • Of these, 4.95 trillion are filters, deposited somewhere in the environment worldwide

Weight and volume of discarded filters:

  • 20 filters (one pack)= 0.12 oz (10 ml)
  • 10,000 filters (one year’s consumption at 20 cigs/day for one smoker)= 3.75 lbs (5 liters)
  • 1,000,000 filters=375 lbs (500 liters)
  • Therefore, 141 million lbs of filters (188 million liters) were dumped into the US environment in 2005

It's really very disgusting.

We could repurpose/recycle those butts into straws in order to end the California bans.
I see it as a big win/win.

Can the butts be weaved into a large flotation device for when parts of California fall off into the ocean? I would miss my sister.

The sooner cigarettes are no longer a thing, the better. For a multitude of good reasons.

And just think how great that 60 ounce Coke will taste knowing the straw used to be the filters on Marlboro menthol cigarettes smoked by a 350-pound woman with weeping ulcers on her upper lip.

The fact that people still smoke just shows you that it's never going away.
Gotta have a severe case of dumbshit to pick up a smoke these days yet millions still do it.
I was behind a rolling cliche last week. Dude in a scooter with an O2 tank attached in front of me in store got himself a pack of smokes. You go dude!

If you have never seen a guy plug his stoma with one hand so he can smoke with the other, you haven't really lived.

I find smoking in most forms disgusting. I had a small bag of, um, herbal substances that is probably two years old now. I just hated that if I wanted to imbibe I had to smoke. Yuck. So I tossed it out when I cleaned the litter boxes a couple weeks ago.

As for straws, I guess this just means I will have to order a glass of wine with dinner. Win-win! :)

I am good with not having lived then. Smoking is such a racket. I have no clue what a pack of cigarettes cost; however, I think the last time my mom asked me to get some I know it was over five dollars. They keep them at that level where those in financially dire straits can still pay for them - but it’s at the expense of paying a utility bill, rent, their child’s medication.

You do realize that most of the money from cigarette sales these days goes to state governments ?

It is, in fact, more accurate to characterize the current tobacco business as a partnership between the various state governments, the tort lawyers and the companies with the state governments receiving the lion's share.

So because cigarettes fund state governments they are good? I am just trying to understand your point. I mean we know the health consequences and environmental consequences, but if we are willing to overlook that why not make marijuana legal? Imagine the boost to the state government budgets - allegedly.
