Steve Bannon Was Disinvited

(because nearly everyone that was involved said Nope)

September 3, 2018

Faced with intensifying and mounting criticism, New Yorker editor David Remnick, who had originally defended the decision to include and interview Bannon, rescinded Bannon's invitation, concluding that there is a "better way" to engage the man who has embraced white nationalist ideas and, arguably, helped shape the president's persona and policies

19th iteration of the festival runs Oct. 5-7. Bannon would have participated in a discussion entitled “The Ideology of Trumpism.”

So, I haven't been a fan of the recent rash of disinviting controversial people to public forums. Freedom speech is for everyone. But on the other hand, its hard to feel sorry for Bannon...he is scum.

... but it's a slippery slope and we cant lose our freedom of speech, because of manufactured outrage or because it feels good when jerks like Steve Bannon get his.

Had to dig down into your post to find out what he'd been disinvited from. I wouldn't suggest you try writing newspaper copy. Your posts are a jumble of "hey, what?"

Anyone who wants to hear what Steve Bannon has to say can find plenty on the internet. His freedom of speech is not impeded in any way by being disinvited.

I don't consider funerals, or weddings, public forums. I certainly don't think that anyone the principles don't want at either event should have the nerve and disrespect to attend.

Keith D Wait... We are talking about him being disinvited from a New Yorker event, not a wedding or funeral right? Because , of course I agree with your statement about weddings/ funerals!

But I do feel it is a principle of good reporting to make opposing viewpoints easily accessible, (though preferably without false equivalencies...)

phrodeau- Well i am honestly torn by 2 view. One is that , not only does the fourth estate have a duty to provide a forum for dissenting viewpoints...but that the very act of engaging those with viewpoints is part of basic journalistic integrity and justice. Shine a light on what is evil to weaken it..

But on the other hand, I am not too excited about giving this " I am not a white supremacists, but codeword: yes I am" Bannon a platform. But I think, better the New Yorker than the dark recesses of the internet. These days it does feel like shining the light of the fourth estate on philosophies like Bannon's, just increases his credibility, instead of wounding it. It isnt working the way it should.

News media’s only duty is to provide news. Many also offer opinions and analysis, but that doesn’t mean they have to.

It took it a hell of a long time for the OP to establish what we were talking about.

keeping the cockroaches in the light

Steve Bannon has another chance to be seen and heard.

The Economist magazine is having an Open Future festival later this month in NYC

They describe Steve Bannon as a former White House chief strategist

Well we might like it, but he was a chief strategist.... so..

I think this is good. In my opinion the Economist brings excellent journalism and editorial savvy to the table. ( maybe a tad conservative on $, but quit liberal on everything else)

They will let him explain himself and then challenge his stupid beliefs with constructive, intelligent, thought out, and hard to refute rebuttal. This is better than finding out what he believes somewhere on the internet.
