Ok, we've all received them and despite our strength, we couldn't resist replying. Has anyone done so in the new regime where they're being "moderated"? I had one today that was totally out of line and I feel the need to respond. Should I even bother? Has anyone found their reply rejected? This question is more from the practical aspect as opposed to the philosophical. I rarely respond to insults, but this one was above and beyond.

I've never responded to an insult. It seems like a way to make things worse. Aside from that, if you want to respond, then respond and let us know if it gets moderated.

I used to reply to comments. Now, I just delete them.

The more you feed the trolls, the more they'll respond. If you don't bother with them, they'll look for someone else who will give the attention they crave.

Don't give them the satisfaction of a reponse.

i second the above. i had one troll who would post some ridiculous comment on every story i put up and i would promptly delete them. a while back, i just said screw it and left it in place and he hasn't posted anything since. some people are just looking for attention, positive or negative, just so that they are somehow noticed. it's also oddly fun to think of their stupid comment being permanently posted for all to see.

I appreciate the responses and I’m with you. I usually turn the other cheek. This one deserves a response. I’ll let you know how moderation handles it.

Everyone is a “tough guy” behind a keyboard. I pay haters no mind - they want a response - to know they got under your skin. My best solution has been to keep posting the stories I enjoy writing. Where I have one hater, there are dozens of other readers who enjoy what I write🌹Kant👠👠👠

Yes, as a newb writer here, I have been shocked with some of the nastier comments and instantly deleted them. I was so taken aback with how brutal some of them were, I seriously considered 'gittin' outta Dodge' and ending this secret little hobby.

I won't post a story unless I really like it myself, so they are kind of 'my babies...'. My longest here is approximately 80,000K words and there are several hundred hours in writing and editing it. Our readers of course, get it all for free. If they'd paid some of their hard-earned money to read it, then I guess they would have the right to post nasty comments if they didn't feel they'd received their money's worth.

But I must say, some of the nice comments, and some of the more thoughtful, detailed, and friendly feedback, make it all worthwhile... usually...! ;)

The moderation process, whatever it is, possibly failed, then, if a shit comment was left.

My advice, don't bother responding, you just give the trolls oxygen and you're playing their game. Just delete it. Besides, if you reply and up the ante, aren't you just as bad - if you're worrying about your comment getting through?

Also, I doubt your first commenter is going to bother coming back to read your reply - a dog only craps in the same place once.

It's also highly possible there isn't "active" moderation of comments at all, more likely a passive spam hunter or perhaps a key word search. I can't imagine Laurel sits and reads all comments.

Recall how Jesus of Nazareth was tortured and hanged by all his friends and family because he was a nice guy.

Hi,

I've got some harsh af comments I always leave them, and I never reply to them, when I'm feeling a bit low I read them and wonder how sad a life must be to feel the need to actually spend your time posting such vicious crap. By all means have a look at the comments on my stories.

I do wonder if the site mods can see who the Anon is.

One of my first stories elicited some negative response due to the reader not understanding part of the female anatomy. Or perhaps I didn't describe the placement of the clitoris well enough. Yes, it hurts one's feelings, but Literotica isn't a place to be thin-skinned. I responded to that one critique and, of course, never received a response. Hey, just ignore, delete, whatever. Let them nurture that hole in their soul while you keep doing what you love.

How could they? The site can only see account holders - anonymous is anyone who leaves a comment without logging on. Sure, the site would see an IP address, but that tells them nothing - it could be some bloke sitting in an internet cafe, or using an airport wi-fi, something like that.

Moderated comments? I have left several comments lately and never received that message.

If they have access to the connection logs or the posting a comment code looks there for the IP address of the poster even if they aren't a registered user, they do have the IP address and can do a quick look up in the registry to see who owns that particular IP. Of course if they are using a Proxy Server or a VPN, no joy.

That's been my strategy from day one. I leave it up there for others to say wow, what an asshole.

Many times a reader will come to an author's 'defense' and bash the troll. Honestly I wish they wouldn't because that is also attention, just not from the author, but when you're that sad, anything is something.

I leave up genuinely bad comments. You didn't like it, it sucked for x,y,z. That's your prerogative.

But I will delete personal trolling comments that have squat to do with the story and are directed at me. I don't see any reason to leave those up.

I've never deleted a single comment. I was shocked at first when I posted a BTB spoof in Loving Wives that many readers hated passionately and read the vitriol it provoked, but I left it up. Unfortunately, the site admin has since deleted many of the more colorful comments I received.

I think the negativity is a good reminder for an author that stories have the potential to get under people's skin. It's not just true here but in the world at large. It's good for authors to know the reactions that their works may provoke.

I almost never respond to negative comments, although I did respond when someone accused me wrongly of plagiarism.

I'm not even aware we CAN respond. If we can, I don't care to. I have a couple of Doinks going to other stories to leave nastygrams because I turned comments off on my latest. Bothers me not as it makes them the greater fools.

Only way I can see to respond is if someone titles the comment "Garbage" you can leave a comment that is titled "@anongarbage" I've seen that done many times

It didn't make things worse and it went right through moderation. I'm sure if it had said "Oh hi. I look for man for happiness and f*** please respond Http://****.***" It would have gotten flagged.

It’s a complete waste of time writing an answer because they’ll never come back to your story again so will never read your respnse. If you’re really bothered about it you could delete or send them a pm. Unfortunately the comment is usually made anonymously which means the pm isn’t possible.

Your audience in that situation is not the ugly commenter but others who review your comments. When I had someone accuse me of copying another story I felt compelled to post a follow up comment on my own story explaining that it was not a copy, because I wanted other readers to see that. But I agree there is no point in most cases trying to respond to an anonymous commenter with nasty comments.

This was not a “most cases” situation. I responded and they sent a direct message with an apology. I deleted both messages by mutual agreement. Thank you all for your input.

Who's to know someone leaving a comment isn't going to come back to see if there's follow up? This is one of those unprovable sweeping maybe yes/maybe no generalizations (except I've seen proof of ones who have, which busts that sweeping claim).

The Web site enables authors to remove any comment on their stories they want to remove. We have this discussion monthly. Do what you feel you want to do about each one as it pops up. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty to either keep the comments or remove them. If they bug you or you think they're unfair or don't address the story erase them, as you please. Or leave them if you want. (And give a thought to your motivation if you try to guilt anyone else about what they should choose to do.)

Don't assume no one's going to come back to check on what happened, because no one can possibly have a handle on whether on the claim they won't (unless they post a "you erased my comment, you rat--which, right there, will deep six the claim that no one comes back. And, yes, I've gotten such follow-up comments and I've erased those too and eventually they just stop coming).
