How Would YOU Fix The VA?

I've been reminded that a certain recently departed individual sat on the Committee overseeing it for many years and did nothing to alleviate the suffering of veterans.

For starters, I would eliminate the protections of deadbeat and crooked administrators that don't seem to get the concept of 'You're Fired!!' and feel they can go whine to arbitrators and mediators like a bunch of BBs.

Two thoughts.

You need to consider the judge(s) that have fought Trump's efforts to fire the inept and criminal (there is a new case in the news) just because their politics are different and you need to couple that with vouchers that decouple the veteran from the VA, giving him or her a choice.

In many ways, I think the VA is a great point of contact for the veteran fresh off of his service injuries, but once he is ready and wants to go home, then he should have the choice of being healed by members of his community.

That ain't new and that ain't 'Rump. That's been happening for years. Go back and dig into sources before Donny's Coronation and you'll find many examples. Congress seems to have set it up that way for some reason and that's what needs to be changed.

I'd propose they be appointed with set terms. They'd have to apply for reappointment and prove their worth. They would not be Civil Service eligible.

I'm not really sure that I understand that post.
Perhaps if you were a bit more specific?
I don't want to reply sans understanding and be declared stupid as is the custom here, so a little clarity is all I ask.

And not the simplistic clarity of "NO MOAH WAHS!"

What committee?

Channelling Nancy Reagan. :)

Get rid of it as it is currently understood.

Needs a ground up revisioning and rebuild.....just too fucking sloppy at this point.

That could work. Abolish it, so nobody can cry about being fired. Attach the medical treatment portion back to the military bases. Let FHA and Treasury deal with the loans, etc.

Then start rebuilding the administrative section from the ground up with new rules so you can gradually move the services back.

Expand the VeteransChoice program.

I've never understood why veterans need their own government health care system, especially when "Murica has teh best damned health care in the world."

I'm okay with a network of prosthetic hospital/clinics funded by the government since amputations seem to be the "new norm" of fighting wars.

I've never understood the "rest of your life" obligation for any little thing. Take the late banhammered AJ for example. He did a very short hitch in the USMC. He spent the following decade popping poppers (Amyl Nitrates) in gay bars throughout the midwest. This gave him a heart condition as a result (atrial fibrillation). And now the government is on the hook for his medical condition as a result of his actions? This makes no sense.

^^ Limit full services to half your active duty time. Beyond that, you only get services for conditions directly related to your active duty.

But then I'd do the same thing for Congress and the President. No more salary or pension for life crap.

Sell the existing facilities, layoff staff and offer veterans the same benefits through local providers. It won't be any worse than it is now.

Give veterans the strongest possible preference for working at the VA, second strongest to immediate family of active duty or veterans.

Upper management jobs only go to 20 year vets with a strong preference to those who rose to leadership roles from the lowest ranks, with a preference for combat vets.

If the military pays for your medical doctorate you must agree to 5 years service with the VA after retirement for anything shorter than 20 years service.

Yeah, what’s the big whoop about having a leg blown off while serving overseas, anyway?

Probably cheaper to shut down the VA medical facilities and just give them vouchers to pay for their healthcare in the private sector. They've earned the care.

Shut it down and roll the Vets into Medicare.

While we are at it, do the same for everyone.

No let's don't. Vets earned their care.

"Earned" their care more than a cop? More than a firefighter? More than a teacher? More than a doctor? More than a garbage collector? More than a preacher? More than a little girl dying of cancer? More than a politician? More than a scientist? More than an astronaut? More than a junkie?

Lifetime care, Gunny? For a two or three year enlistment where the majority never heard a shot fired in anger?

Tell it to the parents who had their kids return in wooden boxes from their deployments.

How else would you motivate young men of quality to enlist in a job in which there is a high likelihood of being killed?
These people will also have access to weapons of destruction. You want good candidates.

I'm extremely happy with the VA, as is every veteran I interact with who use it. Politicians should leave it alone. Every time you hear of someone bitching about the VA, chances are they don't use it.
