In a Sunburned Country Story Event: Official Support Thread

5K words in now. After a work-induced hiatus, I am back in the saddle and looking to get it closed out. It looks likely to be in the 10-15K word range when done.

Oddly enough, it is a completely different story to the one I had started writing.

Great. My drop bear story has evolved. Mining, sacred aboriginal land, a crocodile monster from the dreamtime and new shoes for Chloe.

Mine... let's see. Lesbian. Cricket. Romance. Cricket. Perth beaches. Cricket. Sydney. Cricket. BBL. Cricket and probably more Cricket.

Thanks for organizing this competition, Chloe. I don't think this story would have come out of me otherwise.

11k words, and the heavy lifting is done. I still get to write the naughty bits.

I've started mine.

I was looking around for a resort to set it in and settled on Palm Cove. Any thoughts?

It's a generic commercial resort full of tourists, probably lots of Americans. It's where the international money goes, but it's not particularly "uniquely Australian." Depends what your story is doing, of course, but for a more genuine Australian flavour nowadays, it's eco-tourism resorts that put you in the desert or the rain-forests, or down in the Tasmanian wilderness. Or anywhere in the Northern Territory, but there you have the famous Australian road killers and crocodiles to deal with. Palm Cove is mint juleps beside a blue pool and a bad pianist in the evening.

Oh crap.

Ok--if I want a place somewhere on the East Coast for deep sea diving to see the coral reefs, and with a place to meet a handsome stranger, what would you suggest?

How about Hamilton Island? - big enough that there's lots of people, meaning a handsome stranger is likely. Totally a resort. Great Barrier Reef diving and pretty much everything else you can think of.

Me, I'm going for the Gulf of Carpentaria. Swamps, snakes, crocs, evil things galore....

Don't forget a cyclone or two. They trundle into the gulf every year, throw down more rain than Noah ever saw, but nobody notices because there aren't many people there, and the ones who are there have big boats and can swim.

Oh yeah! Mine. Evil demon croc from dream time. Torrential rain. Teeth looking from the water.... Steve plugs croc with Lahti 20mm, Chloe collects teeth for Steve's hat.... (Akubra of course...) - and a good excuse to wear some iconic Drizabone rainwear

minor nitpick: coral needs sunlight, so you're not going to find it in the deeps.

One of the daft things about Oz is that Crocs are a protected species (and have been for 40 years) but whilst people don't kill Crocs, the Crocs don't afford people the same consideration.

If you are in the Gulf country, two feral animals can cause some heartache. Firstly Water Buffalo are big, mean and ugly and feral pigs are all of the above and seriously smart as well.

I was pig hunting in the Gulf country some fifteen years ago when a colleague shot two pigs. One was a clean kill, the other was injured and ran into water - then all hell broke loose. Two crocodiles completely unseen by us emerged from the water, grabbed the pig, and started a huge fight over what was very soon a carcass. Where were we? about 30 to 40 feet away and - rapidly, much further. :)

That could work. That gorgeous turquoise water!

This is my neck of the woods.

If you would like to give me some more information or message me some details I could plonk you in the right place.

Hamilton Island is in the WhitSundays a group of islands very touristy. People don't live permanently on those islands per se they are resorts only and the staff would stay there except on their days off. The beach on the mainland is Airlie Beach and you can travel to the islands and the reef from there. It's also the Drug capital of Australia :)

Other suggestions

An off beat resort town that the locals love but the international world haven't discovered yet is 1770 (yes that is the name of a town) at the middle section of the reef. Almost small country town like but beautiful. it is also surrounded by rainforest.

If your looking for semi touristy only accessible by 4 wheel drives no signals for phones etc you can't go past Frazer Island the largest sand island in the country. It's right at the southern tip of the reef. It's mostly camping but some houses there not big crowds but the right sort of people for your story maybe.

At the top end of the reef you have private Islands like Turtle island that the rich and the famous go to, I think only three couples can occupy the island at a time. Its up near Port Douglas, very touristy but only in recent years. Port Douglas has all the typical resorts well known hotels and resorts at the upper end of the money scale as well as a little back packer accommodation.

Let me know if you want more options :)

Drizabone is a bit dated now, try looking up R M Williams stuff it's what the jackaroo's are wearing this season ;)
