It is wonderful to have moderation eliminating the spam from the comments lists.

However, batch processing now means that the Public Feedback Portal is updated less frequently and it overflows when updating occurs. Can we have the list of most recent comments expanded from 15 to perhaps 50, so that all recent comments can be shown on the list?

What Is Comment Moderation?

I submitted 2 comments on JB44's recent story. Both
resulted in messages I have never seen before -"message submitted for moderation". What is this? Is it personal or some new commenting vetting program?
Thanks!

Randi explained it in a comment on one of the LW stories. It is a process to get rid of the spam ladies who are looking for mature men, or will delight you, or the various other things. The problem is, as I said in my post above, that the batch processing means that the comments come through in big batches and overflow the Public Feedback Portal where the most recent fifteen comments are published.

We need to have the most recent fifty in the list of most recent comments so that they don't overflow.

I had a comment just get deleted from my own story, interacting with a reader. When I tried to re-write the comment, now it says the comment has to be approved.

This is so weird. Why was my comment originally removed?

Program filter?

There are two websites for my local football team. One is the official club site and the other ones is run by the fans for the fans. Unfortunately some “fans” can’t write comments without using profanities. The site uses a software program, don’t ask what because I’ve no idea, that automatically filters out the offending words. I wouldn’t know where to begin looking but surely it would be more welcome and more effective than moderating an holding back comments just for a very minor problem.

The spam is annoying but I don’t think it’s a big deal to simply delete the spam when it pops up. Far better than what’s being done at the moment which, apart from irritating the users, must have increased the workload of the administrators enormously.

Also is there any indication of how long will it be before we can update our signature and profile?

Hours between comment updates

The new system of moderation has greatly reduced the value of the commentaries.

I presume it is being done by human assessment and intervention rather than by some automatic spam-detecting program, because there can be many hours between the postings of a new batch of comments, and then there are so many posted that they don't all fit on the Public Feedback Portal list.

To me, the conversations among the commenters are often the best part of any story. Even the 'comment wars' can be fun. Conversations lose their appeal when there is a wait of five or six hours from posting to publication of a comment, followed by a similar time for somebody's reply to appear.

Is there no way the moderation process can be automated?

Discussion Boards are for conversation, not the Comment section of stories. Perhaps that's one of the reasons for holding them back.

Thank you for all of the feedback on this.

We can't comment in too much detail about spam/abuse prevention for obvious reasons, but we are aware of the sentiment that comment moderation needs to be done more quickly, and we are working on that.

In addition, we have long planned to rollout threaded comments on stories. That should help to keep any conversations more organized.

Thank you all again for the feedback on this. We are listening, we just can't say too much right now. :D

I would also like to confirm that the overall number of comments being posted on stories is stable right now. We did not see a drop in daily comments after implementing the new measures. We believe that some readers were being discouraged from posting comments because of the TOS violating messages that were previously being posted on new stories. While we are working on improving the new system, we do not see any obvious drop in new comments since it was implemented.

Readers don't tend to hang out on the Discussion Boards, though, and it's fun to talk with the people who are invested in your stories! :)
