Con artist's wife uses chain migration to bring in more immigrants

The Trump administration is expanding its war on liberal immigration practices, targeting so-called “chain migration,” a costly loophole that allows a legal immigrant to bring in relatives even if they are unskilled and destined to go on welfare.

A package released by the White House found no benefits to the practice, and instead put a $300 billion annual cost on immigration, claimed that the overwhelming number of relatives let in do not have proper job skills and indicated that there is virtually no end to the “chain” that can be tapped to enter the U.S.

On Thursday, the third wife of the con artist, a possible illegal immigrant herself, used chain migration to allow two more immigrants to become U.S. citizens, the very thing the con artist has railed against.

The attorney for Melania's parents had this to say about the con artist wanting to shut down the chain migration "loophole":

"I believe strongly in the principles of family reunification, which is a bedrock of immigration policy and law and has brought millions of people happily to our shores," Wildes said.

I would take strong exception to some of what you said here. The source of my information is the experiences of my wife and me when we greeted two daughters and four grandchildren upon their immigration to the USA from their native Philippines. This is an example of the chain migration you criticize.

We sponsored the new arrivals, after demonstrating that we had the ability to support them, if needed. They definitely were not allowed to apply for welfare or any kind of public assistance. They were all bilingual in English and Tagalog, so that was not a problem. The two youngest grandchildren graduated from high school, then college. The oldest grandchild earned a masters degree and is currently married and employed as a teacher. The second is also gainfully employed, although he did not go to college. The third oldest is an accountant with a BA degree from a state U. and the youngest is a musician. All four pay their own way.

One of the daughters returned to the Philippines for personal reasons. The other daughter became sick after her arrival and is now supported by her offspring and by
me and my wife. Unlike many natural-born citizens she does not receive public assistance. The four grandchildren will continue indefinitely as good citizens, and the nation is a better place because of their presence.
