Erik met Elena his sophomore year in College. He enjoyed her company. Not only did she help keep his mind off the trouble he was having with his dad (Dave) telling Erik that Dave was getting remarried but she was one of the nicest people Erik had met. A couple months after they started dating they started having sex.

Elena didn't share much about her past besides her mom and sister had just moved to a new town before she started school there and the fact that her dad had passed away four years prior to the story's beginning.

After a while Dave says that things are getting crazy. His now new wife is having troubles with her oldest daughter. After that things settle down between Erik and his dad enough that Erik tells his dad that he plans on proposing to Elena.

Just before Erik proposes Elena tells him she's pregnant. He proposes then and there and she says no thinking that he is only propsing because she is pregnant. Her parents got married because her mom got pregnant and they were never very happy in life. The only good thing in their marriage was their kids and sex. But when Erik bends to one knee and shows the ring and propses Elena realizes Erik's true feelings and the meaning behind the proposal and says yes.

At the end of the school year Erik and his new wife head to his home. On the way there Elena is getting more and more uneasy. Erik thinks it's because they're going to see his dad before meeting up with her mom. It isn't until after Elena sees the address of Erik's dad's house and sees a familiar car that they find out that they need to talk.

When they get out of the car Erik asks what's wrong. Before Elena can answer her sister steps out of the front door of Erik's childhood home. Shortly after that is when they both find out for sure that Erik's dad had married Elena's mom and that they are in fact step-siblings.

Why this is a problem? Other than mild embarrassment? You may want to consult what the laws say about this, though, there can possibly be some trouble, but unless I missed something and they share at least one parent by birth they are no close relatives in purely biological sense, and that is the only thing that really counts towards the true, meaningful taboo of incest (first rate relatives have high chance to bring out oppressive gene coded errors: diseases, mutilations, mutations, weirdness, etc).

Suppose, the order would be the other way around, two unrelated youngsters marry, then their single parents get together, fall for each other and marry too. Somewhat kinky, but I wouldn't even see that as weird, such happen. Now the already married youngsters become also step-siblings, should they divorce because of that? I would see that absurd.

Now, if both their parents were divorced each other, split their (twin?) children, hid that from them as good as they could, married someone else, divorced again and get re-married to each other (I think I have heard about a pair that divorced twice and re-married for the third time to each other after prolonged period and different partners in between)... but I can't see how that mess could go this far without blowing up already somewhere half way.

Maybe one of them haven't yet born at the time of first divorce, and she hid that from him being mad, but even then, both would knew they are at least step-siblings, and mother will know or suspect they are indeed brother and sister.

Just for a fun aside, one of my high school friends had a particularly messed up family. He plotted out some more weird and incestuous, but at least theoretically possible (even if law ignoring) alterations to his already chaotic family tree, that turned him into his own step-grandfather.

Never said it was a problem. Sure maybe there is a little embarrassment or not. Maybe there is just more surprise. Like how in the world did we not figure out that our parents were married?

If there was a problem maybe it was just something that they were raised to believe that even step-siblings shouldn't have that relationship. Or maybe one knew and the other didn't. Who knows at the moment.

I've half-written a story (based on real people and place) I may eventually finish, about two single parents marrying their families together. Many of their kids are of fuckable age so the action gets hot in their big house. But it's not incest and they're only nominally step-kin, not having been raised together -- only a few months' familiarity.
