But this is all so far gone, is there actually that much that can be done?

Disarming the population - it's too late for that, guns will still be available to crooks or via the underground.
Putting metal detectors around schools - they will just start shooting at them just outside the school.
Armed guards and teachers - that might reduce the carnage, but it won't stop it.

A shotgun and a .38 revolver. The shooter illegally in possession of both, and illegally on campus with both. Shooter has no previous criminal record. Shooter told leo he planned to kill himself rather than surrender, but found out he didn't have enough nuts to actually do it.

No infamous "assault" weapons, no infamous "bump stocks", no infamous "high capacity magazines"; i.e., no weapons/accessories anti-gunners have always insisted must be banned if this type of killing is to stop.
