The ones who are aware that John McCain served the United States in combat during the Vietnam war. The ones who are aware that he was captured, held prisoner for 5 years and tortured. The ones whose heads would have exploded had someone in the Obama administration joked about his terminal medical condition.

I am a veteran but not conservative,Independent with a slightly Left leaning. My father was a POW in World War Two and my two uncles both served in the army for over twenty years.
John McCain has been denigrated and insulted by the ultra Right for decades. Lies like he broke under torture while being interrogated have been passed off as true even when there are no facts to back it up. It does not matter how many times you confront these people with the truth they only attack you because you aren't "A patriotic American"like they say they are.

I think that he is like all politicians prior to Trumpism. They tried to appeal to their base while changing their tune depending on the crowd to attract moderate voters. I think that the Clintons moved much further to the center than they wanted to for that reason. Trump is not trying to appeal to anyone but the far right. Pissing off everyone else adds to his appeal with his base. Lately, I've been thinking that attacking him and his supporters feeds into his scheme. Scheme is probably not the right word since I don't think that he is politically savvy enough to scheme.

As for veterans, I served in the Air Force, first enlisted and then received my commission through ROTC after leaving the AF to return to school. Followed in my fathers footsteps. He was a WWII Army veteran, serving in the Philippines as a combat soldier, receiving the Bronze Star, SilverStar, and Purple Heart for wounds from a grenade. So much for ‘conservative patriotism is bullshit’.
