At some point, we've all gotten some degree of inspiration from common sources--books, movies, personal experience, and the like--but what are some of the unusual or unexpected sources that have put an idea in your head?

The one that stands out for me was watching all of the spray coming off of the car in front of me, when I was driving down the freeway in the middle of a terrible downpour. That little thing put a kernel of a thought in my head that I developed into an poem about the nature of the world (locally) that I live in and how it's shaped my entire perspective on it.

What've you guys got?

An SNL skit's likely going to turn into a filthy GM story for me at some point. That's probably the least likely source of inspiration I've had to date.

A lot of my stories are planned rather than inspired: pick a category, envision some characters, create a conflict, some build up, and a resolution.

One of my stories was inspired by a scene viewed driving northeast over the Mogollon Rim in Arizona. It opens with that scene and carries on with impressions of Holman, Az from the same and earlier trips.

Another was inspired by a job that my niece had for one summer. It was her 'dream job.' I fleshed it out with a few personalities and experiences from people I know who have worked on and organized similar jobs.

I find I get a lot of inspiration while I'm driving. Ditto with shopping. If you pay attention, you'll notice things. I've got a story I've been working on about an encounter I had with a 20 year old college student. Her car was out of gas and I just happened to have a 5-gallon gas jug in my truck. The thing that struck me and inspired me to write the story was that she was obscenely busty. I mean a 5' petite woman that had volleyballs under her tank top. But I digress.

There's an endless amount of inspiration out there. I struggle to write it all. I get images from seeing people and then try to give them personalities.

I write my best stories after siting in the observation balcony in an operating room, watching surgeries at my local hospital.

Pls tell us you're not watching abortions or brain surgeries as inspirations.

Images. Pick an image and imagine its backstory and/or consequences. Cartoon panels and odd pix; billboards and other roadside art; striking magazine adverts; museum and gallery views -- each offer glimpses into storylines. One James Thurber cartoon is to blame for three of my pieces.

^^^ Yes.

Images...I'm currently working on a story that was inspired by an image and the text I added to that image for another site.

Songs...them too. People. Situations. Sometimes just what someone might say about something.

Something from my past or present. Even I don't know what or who may inspire my next story.

I was fooling around with a program called Sketch Up and created this...

So far it had inspired series of nine ebooks.

Pinterest, Songs, snips from Real Life and things other people write. Stories, news articles, jokes, snippets. Not in that order

Mostly random ideas that happen to float through my noggin, but also very often RL things I run into. I once saw a mother and daughter in a cafe, smiling at one another a lot, talking very quietly and stroking the back of one another's hands, or grazing with fingernails. It became my inspiration for Sapphic Serenity.

RL things that happen to me become stories. My five years as a server will make for a funny read, when I finish it. And now that I'm working in TV and movies back in Toronto, I know what it's like to get laid in a wood shop and a yurt.

Music, songs, those conjure images for stories.

Entire stories may not be inspired by something I witness, but scenes very often are.

The biggest part of mine as RR come from musing some wordplay to use in a title, and then building a story from that. I'm especially tickled by the one word wordplay.

I have a stockpile of titles that don't have stories yet.

One of them finally came together this morning. I typed the last word of "Coming In Third" and looked at the clock to go "Shit! It's 7 a.m.!"

I also have goals to hit every category eventually, so I puzzle over ideas for that every so often. I'm hitting a point where I'm down to some of the rougher categories where my style and preferences are hard to fit Lit's category readership expectations, so those are coming few and far between. Easier on another site, where short stories are the norm.

I also want every letter in the alphabet represented by all three of my pen names on all three sites where I post. I have lots of unused Q titles. "Quite Neighborly" was the one that won the muse race. Down to I X Y Z here as RR.

this week i was following a thread on another board that became a conversation between 2 people who had a lot in common. in my warped imagination, it became a story that i added to my list for the future.

Literotica writers.

I don’t know if others would think that this comment fits in this thread as being unusual.

Two writers have recently given me the inspiration for a story in a category I read occasionally if the description and first couple of paragraphs grab me. I never thought I would ever write a story for that category but hopefully the story will be good enough to submit it.

From time to time I go to a cemetery dressed in clothes I don't care about. I find a freshly dug grave, I sit in it and type away for as long I can. I try to get out of there before the funeral ceremony begins.
