Presidential historian Brinkley: If evangelicals flee Trump over alleged porn star affairs he’s doomed

Appearing on CNN’s New Day, noted presidential historian Douglas Brinkley claimed that President Donald Trump’s base is predominately made up of evangelicals at this point and, should there more revelations about him having affairs with adult actresses, they may grow fed up and flee dooming any chances he has of reelection in 2020.

Speaking with host Victor Blackwell, Brinkley said he was amazed at the number of evangelicals who have stuck it it out with Trump considering his history with women, his Access Hollywood comments and his multiple marriages.

Noting a Trump-backing pastor defending Trump over his alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels, Brinkley called the response “disappointing.”

“It’s like he has an inoculation,” Brinkley continued. “If they would start turning on Donald Trump, you would see his base shrink. Donald Trump is holding at about 35 percent. If evangelicals would start saying, ‘We’ve had enough of this immoral president,’ you would see Trump’s base start shrinking and possibly the end of getting reelected.”

Attorneys for President Donald Trump over the weekend reportedly threatened to take CBS to court if the network goes through with plans to air an interview with an adult film actress who allegedly had an affair with their client.

A person familiar with the legal strategy told BuzzFeed News that a “legal injunction” was already being prepared to prevent Stephanie Clifford, whose screen name is Stormy Daniels, from speaking on the CBS program about her alleged affair with the president.

“We understand from well placed sources they are preparing to file for a legal injunction to prevent it from airing,” the source said.

BuzzFeed noted that details of the legal strategy were not immediately clear.

Update: CBS is expected to air the interview on March 18, according to BuzzFeed.

Rex Tillerson refused to resign after John Kelly asked — so Trump fired him in a tweet

Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was fired by President Donald Trump on Monday after he refused a request to resign.

According to CNN, Tillerson officially learned of his firing on Tuesday morning when Trump informed the world in a tweet. But reports also said that Chief of Staff John Kelly had contacted Kelly on Friday to warn him.

Sources told AP’s Zeke Miller that Kelly had asked Tillerson to resign, but the secretary of state refused and forced Trump to personally take the action on Monday.

Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee released a status report on the Russia investigation — and buried within it is a revelation that may aide investigations into whether the president obstructed justice early in his administration.

In their report on the committee’s all-but-closed Russia probe, the Democrat minority said it “has a good faith reason to believe that the White House does in fact possess” documents or recordings of conversations between President Donald Trump and former FBI Director James Comey.

Despite receiving two letters from the White House, the minority concluded that the administration’s responses were “woefully inadequate” and did not prove to them that any “recordings, memoranda or other documents” currently or formerly existed.

During Comey’s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, he remarked that he would welcome the release of such recordings.

Hearing date set for Trump showdown with Stormy Daniels

Porn star Stormy Daniels will go to court on July 12 in a bid to dissolve an agreement stopping her discussing an affair she says she had with President Donald Trump, according to court papers published Wednesday.

Lawyer Michael Avenatti filed a lawsuit on behalf of Daniels last week seeking to toss out the confidential settlement she signed just days before the November 2016 election.

The lawsuit alleges that Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, began an “intimate relationship” with Trump in the summer of 2006 that continued well into 2007.

Using the pseudonyms Peggy Peterson and David Dennison, Daniels and Trump were to sign the agreement, along with Essential Consultants.

But Trump never signed, providing the basis for Avenatti’s attempt to have it thrown out and release Daniels from her obligations.

Daniels is asking for presiding judge Elizabeth Feffer to be replaced, arguing that she has a conflict of interest because she is seeking an appointment to a seat in federal court.
