Hi, I just submitted my first story and was curious as to how long it generally takes to have it posted? I would like to hold off on writing a follow up until I get some feedback.

Well ...

It depends, really. I have had stories published in as little as 24 hours and as long as 5 days. I suppose it has to do with the amount of submissions the publishers receive at any given time. My advice is to just write. You don't necessarily have to submit your work until you wish, but at least your story will be ready for that, or any changes you may wish to make. Also, there's no guarantee that you will receive feedback of any kind, so again, just write.

If it's your first story, it may take a moment or two to get approved. Once you have a bit of a track record ... zoom! :)

Good luck

Don't hold off writing that followup as you may not get any comments nor feedback from the feedback thread. Just saying be prepared, you can always rewrite it before submitting.

Welcome to the AH.

As Sam says, your first story will usually get more scrutiny until Laurel is sure that you're following her rules. The amount of time it takes can also depend on a number of other factors.

  • The length of the story
  • Whether you submitted a file or copy/pasted the text into the submission form
  • If the story needs a lot of HTML markup
  • How many other stories were submitted at the same time
  • If there is a contest going on (contest entries get priority)
  • And of course what else Laurel has going on in her life at the time.

Ever story posted to Literotica goes through Laurel. It's kind of a bottle neck, but it's her site and it's how she maintains the level of quality that she wants.

Surely it's a series of readers... I don't know about you, but I'd shoot myself in the face if I had to read every single story across every single category that gets posted to this site.

I'm just repeating what I've heard from several long-timers around here. Supposedly ever story gets at least a cursory look from Laurel. Of course, it's possible I've been misinformed.

That is my understanding. Laurel told me that between she and Manu they have a handful of help, but I think the help is on the sales or technical sides, not on the editorial side. They work seven days a week, and Laurel said that since the site started in 1998 she's been away from it for a total of about ten days.

Laurel must skim all stories as they come through, but she seems to spend more time on stories by new authors. She's very good at skimming. She did an excellent job of adjusting the tags on my last story. When I've had to take a publishing problem to her she's always had a clear and apparently first-hand knowledge of my problem.

I think some repeated operations are at least partly automated, so she doesn't have to commit a lot of time to routine tasks.

Well. She deserves a bloody award for that. I hope she has a good therapist. :p

I agree. I'm hoping they have some things that help streamline this. My own eyes burn thinking about skimming the volume of stories that are submitted. I read amazingly fast, but dayum.

Since others answered your question, I'll just say welcome to the AH. :)

There even are a few threads which were updated in the past few weeks talking about this. Apparently some categories also has a different 'lag' as apparently Laurel doesn't check those a lot, or takes more time for them, like the audio-one. But generally? For me, it takes 2-3 days by average. The first one took a little longer though, but that could've been just me clicking the damn 'preview' button every hour.

If you want feedback from some of the authors once its live start a thread here and post the link to the story.

Why would I want to do that! Then all you better writers go read and criticize my stuff! No, I'm perfectly satisfied with the bunch of people who can't write a story to save their lives to vote for my stories :D ;)

Of course, one can always include a link in one's signature to one's stories as well.

Mine have taken about 3 days. If you submit on the weekend, could take longer.

Make sure you really submitted the story and not just saved it as a draft. I made that mistake with my first story and wondered why it didn't get published...

New story --> complete the form --> click on "Preview" and when everything is to your liking --> go on "Submit for Publication"

Haha, yeah my activity says I successfully submitted the story.
