I've lost a few chapters and small segments, but fortunately never a full piece.

Now stories I wish I never wrote or anyone ever saw? That's a different story:eek:

Long before I was writing erotica properly, I wrote the start of a teacher/college student dom/sub thing as a draft email at work once, I kept coming back to it over quite a long time and it was coming along nicely, so I emailed it to another account to pick up at home, forgot about it and much later on deleted that email account. I have moved on in my writing now but I do sometimes think of that story, if I had it I might want to rework and improve it but I don't feel inclined to start it from scratch.

I don't think the world was robbed of a masterpiece though.

I’m currently writing a storyline from my diary and love letters called “Best Friends Forever” the diary is missing a few pages worth of entries I ripped out years ago and threw away so most of the first couple of chapters will be written from memories. I regret throwing the pages away now that I have a desire to write the story inspired by my personal diary.👠👠👠Kant 🌹

There are three I lost that I wish I could get back. Written on my old netbook that died, but I do still have the hard drive somewhere I think so maybe one day I can figure out a way to get them off of it. They also might be on an external hard drive I had, but I can't get my laptop to read it. Seems like it can't work with anything after Windows 7 and my laptop has Windows 10. One day maybe I can retrieve them.

Anyway it was one that I really loved called Confessions Of A Boring Fifteen Year Old. That one I miss the most.
Then one that I could never really get the perfect title to, but it was about a shy 18 year old that was about to start her senior year but went to stay a month at her mom's college friend's house to babysit their 4 boys. Of course she fell for the boy's uncle while there.
And then I lost parts of my longest story. Lost a huge chunk of the middle. It would take too long to recreate it.

As for the laptop hard drive. Go to Best Buy and check out Rockets USB standalone hard drive case. Take the hard drive out of your laptop and pop it into the Rocket case. Now you have a usb external hard drive. All the data should be accessible. If Windblows 10 won't read it. Boot up on the USB and your old windows on the external drive should boot up. Some things might not load but enough should to allow you to transfer files.

At the same time try getting the data off the old drive 10 won't read.

I came close to losing everything I had on my laptop a few years back. A computer shop salvaged it for me (a friend works there). Anyway, since then I took everything I could find and backed it up . . . some stories are in three or four places. I was a slow learner.

The first erotic story I ever wrote I lost to a disk crash. At that point I'd been working on it for more than a year. It was at ~170,000 words. The end was maybe visible in the far distance, but progress had slowed to a crawl.

I have one story up on Lit that originated as part of the lost story. It was rewritten from memory with a change in the protagonists. I also took a concept from the lost story and used it in a Lit series. There were other, long diversions that could become standalone works. At least one would be novel-sized by itself.

Happened to me once, a few years ago, when I was thinking about submitting a story here but hadn't done so. I got about half way through it, and then the computer crashed and I lost it. I've backed up all my stories on backup hard drives ever since.

I've written the start to a new cyberpunk story about a musician who ends up on the wrong side of the tracks. It was a concert scene, hard and messy. And I lost it during one of several PC migrations. I do create backups every few months, but none of my disc images or external hard drives has it. Very annoying.

My very first attempt...way back in '85...was lost due to a hard drive crash. Three stories ...poof... gone. The only back up then was 3 1/2 inch floppys and I was short a couple.

A long long time ago, way back when in High School, I started one called "The Jade Palace Hotel" and I wrote hugely and my old laptop crashed (I spilled coffee into it and yes, I was a huge coffee drinker already back in High School and all my friends used to laugh at me about it ....) and it kind of frizzled and sparked and everything went zzzzzap and I lost it all coz I didn't have any backup at all. Still have that story tucked away in the back of my head though. It wasn't bad at all, largely coz I was skimming thru other peoples novels and plagiarizing like crazy on scenes and dialog, so it was actually way better than my first stories here. Coz I copied some good writers :D - and the plot was boiler plate romance novel with few twists of my own. And I remember writing graphic sex for the first time and getting a little carried away ....

Going to have to resurrect that story from the back of my head one day

In my youth, and in continuing into my late thirties and period of my first marriage, I wrote things down, events, adventures, sexual exploits... memorializing them in what sometimes sounded like giant passion plays in kind of an informal diary or journal. These were written in spiral notebooks that would eventual get dog-eared as I'd take the current one everywhere with me and occasionally pull old ones off a shelf to review and reminisce.

I wrote some of these diary entries in pros form as if they were first person stories. In relation to my published stories, these make up the basis of some of my stories (and those to come) and though I destroyed the original journals I think the act of writing the events down, and occasionally even reading them when feeling nostalgic and melancholic, helped me consolidate details into long term memory.

I also wrote volumes of poetry, most of it romantic and intended for the specific "girl de jour" (or that one guy),much of it about sex and sexuality, and more than a little of it about my head, my state of mind, my mental health if you will at the time.

Here's the rub. During one of my past self loathing Christian guilt fueled "purges", in which I'd get rid of those "ungodly" things in my life like my porn collection, sex toys, and panties and lingerie, and removed personal intimate pictures and stories I'd posted on some sites, I destroyed many of my journals and especially those from my youthful gay relationship.

Some of the motivation to destroy them was also fueled by paranoia that my then estranged first wife would find them and try to use them as leverage in court. BTW, paranoid with good cause since she and her boyfriend at the time broke into the house, and into my locked filing cabinet, in order to pilfer financial records. Why didn't they ask...LOL? In the end, the financial picture she painted in court didn't begin to resemble the reality on the court disclosures.

I never knew what happened to the poetry....it just disappeared. I speculate that my ex-wife, who knew of the existence of the journals, thought she was taking them, but instead took my volumes of poetry which she destroyed when she found out they were the wrong thing. She's never admitted to it.

In any event, I wish I'd never gotten rid of or lost any of it. I wish I had those stories, and those documented memories, and really wish I had my poetry.

Lol. I'm guessing here that your "long long time ago" has a slightly different time scale to mine...

Just wait till you turn thirty, girl, you will feel positively ancient :)

Thanks!
I tried this last year, but couldn't figure out how to do anything since my laptop was Windows 10. Gave it to my ex to see if he could do it since his job for the last 17 years was head computer tech at a college, nope he couldn't figure it out!

I'm going to try again though. I WANT my stuff back!!!

Well, these days I'm closer to thirty than twenty and one of these days I'll grow up and feel like an adult, I swear.

Back in 2005/2006, I wrote blurbs into journals. I have six books. Because I used a pencil, I recently noticed some pages are so faded I can't read them anymore. They aren't written or typed anywhere else so I'll have to see what I can save.

I've just finished writing a story that I think is so phenomenally awful that I want to lose it
Can anyone help?

I do stuff w/pen and paper before committing it to anything hi-tech. Even then, I have the means to correct it. Wouldn't you know it though? I still write in cursive.....it pisses people off. I still care about my schoolin'.

I had a whole huge notebook full of hand written stories that I wrote before I got married. Husband insisted that I get rid of those plus a lot of other stuff. And like a fool, I did. Am just now getting back into that kind of writing again.

In a fit of rage and pain at the end of my first marriage, I burned everything that I'd ever written.

I'm old enough that it was in spirals before I 'graduated' to getting my hands on a typewriter.

I worked on it all one night and by the next morning, all that was left was ashes. Kind of like that relationship.

I don't know that I miss the words that I wrote so much as the creative fire.

But it's not dead yet and neither am I. All of life is just story fodder. I just need to remember how to tell myself a story and then share it with others.

Have you tried scanning the pages and then adjusting the contrast in an image-editing programme? You might be able to make the text more legible doing that without too much hard work.
