There are hundreds of millions of guns out there. If I am unarmed, I am helpless against them. However, if I am also packing, muggers and other criminals may think at least twice about messing with me or with those I hold dear. The best way to avoid trouble is to be ready for it or, in the words of a famous American: "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty."

It's too bad it should be that way, but that is a fact of life.
