The "What is an Assault Rifle?" thread

That is what makes any proposed legislation difficult.

In the UK obviously we don't have the US constitution but we still have a problem with mentally ill people and guns. It is a tiny problem compared with the US. Our Police have the right to remove even shotguns from someone who is considered a danger to themselves or others because of mental illness.

However, getting a medical professional to certify that someone is a danger is very difficult. If they do, it might be time-limited for a crisis. Once that crisis is over the gun owner can get their gun(s) back.

A worse problem is vehicle drivers. Relatives may be extremely worried that someone with poor eyesight, mental illness or senility is continuing to drive. Getting the individual to stop driving when they don't want to can be very difficult. Even a doctor's opinion might not be enough and family arguments can occur.

The number of deaths in the UK caused by mentally ill people having access to guns is tiny.

The number of deaths in the UK caused by drivers who are physically or mentally incapable is also tiny. It is far outnumbered by drivers who have caused death by driving when impaired by using alcohol and drugs.

We have legislation to prevent those who are mentally ill having access to guns.

We have legislation to prevent those who are physically or mentally incapable from driving vehicles.

Time and time again there are incidents when the legislation has failed to prevent an incident.

We can ban drivers for months or years. Police arrests and court records show that some people will just ignore the ban. In the UK banned drivers cause more deaths than mentally ill people with guns or incapable drivers continuing to drive.

Devising legislation is going to be very difficult.

So do we Ogg. They just aren't reported or enforced if they have been reported.

Maybe locking up crazy people is an idea whose time has returned.

Cost? Virtually zero.

Just let everyone out of jail who’s in there for drugs and put the crazy people in their cells.

Let me elaborate a bit. If the Progressives (Fabian Socialists for the most part) can take over the language of the debate, then they feel they can control the debate. They see an AR15 being used and then they associate the term "assault rifle" to it because both are based on the AR platform. However, that is not true because AR does not mean assault rifle. For many reasons, it is just one of the more popular models, maybe because so many of our veterans find the familiarity with that and the M16. If they can turn the argument over to "assault rifles," then they win the argument because the uneducated will side with them and wonder how people could defend owning an "assault rifle."

The ACLU will immediately go to war to protect their civil rights and California will lead the nation in becoming a sanctuary for them.

I blame auto designers.

Start building cars with long engine bonnets again and gun sales in the USA would plummet.

Too bad Charlie Manson died, always thought he’d run for and be elected Governor of California one day, he was their perfect candidate. He could have easily run with Hillary for that matter, would have had progressives salivating at that much ‘forward thinking’.

How do you define 'crazy people'?

That is the critical problem.

Most mass shooters wind up pleading not guilty by reason of insanity, so you could start with their afflictions and go from there.

One possible reason for the confusion is because the term "assault rifle" is a construction of the news media. It's a term they thought up. The term isn't part of the official nomenclature of any American military weapon.

Sounds like Catch 22 -The shooter was insane because he committed the murders; if he wasn't insane he wouldn't have killed anyone.

How do you ban gun ownership for mental illness if someone is only sometimes insane?

Look at allll the gun dummies tryin' their best to 'splain away the AR-15. That gun killed all those kids in 5 minutes, not 30 seconds, so it's not an "assault rifle", nossir.

...because reasons.

He could have done the same thing with a Glock 19

How quickly does a bomb kill? Arson? A car driven into a crowd?

I'll state it again, details matter. Especially when you present a treatise on the subject in an attempt to educate others.

Dude, you must be one of those guys who gets off on pointing out mistakes made by others but who doesn't see the mistakes he makes himself.

But hey, keep scanning for all those missing periods and typo's. It makes you soooo much smarter than everyone else who's out partying while you're squinting at the computer screen. Oh yeah, don't forget to write a wall of text telling me how brilliant you are at finding my mistakes. It's enlightening to everyone as they flip past it on their way down to the next post.. (<-- oh looky, I put in a double period. Enjoy!)

An obstetrician AND a pilot! What are the odds?

Actually pretty damn good. It takes money to afford an airplane and the maintenance it requires. Doctors seem to be in a pluraility of those who choose the hobby because they CAN afford it.
