Some people take drugs to induce a semi-conscious state so that they're aware of what's happening but can't respond. I've also seen people saying, "As long as he doesn't wake me up, I don't care what he does to me." (Especially if one partner works days and the other nights.)

Frankly, for me the concept is not believable. I can't really wrap my head around anyone sleeping so soundly they wouldn't wake up?

What if it started with her sleeping, but then she wakes up and say's something like; "Oh Frank, I've wanted this for so long but didn't know if you did!"....or some such in order to make it more believable and less "rapey"? One could build up the tension with internal dialogue before the big event which portrayed these doubts and fears.
