I did not say it was the only option, just that it was the only immediate way to make schools safer.
There are a lot of other things that could be done, but none of them are practcal whilst the grown-ups squabble amongst themselves the way they are now.

Your mistake is thinking it's the "only" way.

Had the existing laws been enforced, the shooter would have been tagged as a risk no later than the 2nd or 3rd visit to his house. At that point any shooting spree he planned for the future evaporated.

Guess what - NO ADDITIONAL COST to the taxpayer. Kids in school are safe. No media frenzy. And no more talk of gun bans and regulations.

Own and use as many firearms as you want in private. In public, be regulated, or be punished as a rogue. Carry near a school? Capitol offense.

Ever since that ridiculous argument was penned the supporters of the Second Amendment ( which should be all Americans, but isn't) were chomping at the bit to get that test it before scotus. They didn't get the chance to do that because the anti-gun side didn't try that argument in court until Heller where they lost.

In the Constitutional debates one of the points of contention was the idea that if they codified inalienable natural rights in the Bill of Rights to make it very plain which rights we are born with and that no government grants and that no government can take away the idiots like you would come along and suggest that they can be taken away. For the sake of discussion let's assume some Civil War baiting scotus in the future decided to rule as you suggest, those of us with the guns would simply use them to reestablish Our God given rights in exactly the same manner that the founders did.

Every human being on the planet has the right to defend themselves and their freedoms. Just because some human beings on the planet choose not to defend those rights doesn't mean they don't exist.

Of course they are. Other than the shooter (who was breaking the law so it doesn't "count") and the representative of the government that can be trusted to keep us safe, that school was entirely free of guns.

The law work exactly as intended which is to keep legal guns away from the school.

The real problem is that they've made schools drug free zone so you don't have armed drug dealers hanging around to dissuade those that engage in criminal activity without a profit motive.

I grew up before the internet was popular, and I remember taking walks by myself at a very young age, and I remember talking to strangers, and meeting people by myself, from maybe age 6 and on.

I can't imagine most kids doing that today.

Parents hover over their kids, and don't trust their kids ultimately. There's an element of controlling nature that a lot of kids today suffer through, and there aren't a lot of outlets for those things.

Kids need room to explore and grow on their own. They need to be able to fail and succeed on their own, and they need to be able to take risks. When we prevent them from taking those risks, we don't allow them to learn that there are repercussions for their failures. We don't teach them real-life consequences. I think that kids are way more sheltered today than they have ever been.

So we have over-medicated kids, who aren't getting adequate mental health treatment, and haven't been allowed to experience the world for themselves. I think that's ultimately what's different now from when I was a kid.

I don't blame the kids. I blame the parents.

This is one of the better explanations that I've heard so far.

And I relate to it too in a sense, because many parents were similarly controlling and restrictive also, in the environment in which I grew up. Although the parental mentality was less lenient and more mistrustful back then: "Parents should decide on everything because kids either don't have that much judgment or are prone to bad things."
And guess what? You're right. Many of those who grew up like that didn't cope very well when real life kicked them in their guts.

I think we're more disconnected as a society, and as such, our kids are feeling far more isolated and alone.
