Most SMI patients are in medicaid. when they choose to stick to their medications and stay in contact with their case manager there is a wide variety of free help up to and including housing, transportation, food and everything else you can possibly think of for the SMI. Mental health care for anyone with an actual diagnosis is now on an outpatient basis nearly all of them received Social Security Disability although there is a long process to get through all the Hoops to get there.

Money has little to with it. Granted, the current bounty is unsustainable when the Obamacare temporary 3-year expansion runs out but I can't see either side of the aisle having the stones not to just simply continually renew it the way they do with the Medicare doc fix, where we pretend we're paying the doctors less than we actually are and then we turn around and go ahead and pay them sort of what they need to keep their doors open.

We no longer institutionalize people that we have a pretty good idea are at some time in the future going to go off their meds and be a problem for themselves and others. As long as they are okay today on their meds we turn them loose. That's not a money problem that's a civil rights dilemma.
