No xfrodo, Phrodeau's definition whilst not complete is much closer to the truth.
A cult is in fact defined as "A small quaisi - religious group, frequently with a charismatic leadership, whose rituals and beliefs are outside conventional belief and practice." There are cults and break away groups in all major religions, for examples : - Sufisim in Islam, Old believers in Russian Orthodoxy, Jainism in Hinduism and of course the most famous cult of all was the Nazarene sect in Judaism led by the charismatic Yeshua Ben Joseph.
When Christianity became mainstream it developed its own cults, a modern example being the fundamentalism of various charismatic Protestant fraudsters. Billy Graham is probably the best known of these, promising future glory to all who allow the leadership to fleece them financially.
This behavior is probably the second oldest profession. The very early church was financed by widows who were persuaded to will their cash to secure their place in heaven. Later the Catholics invented Simony and the sale of offices to advance the cashflow. The Muslims had Dhimmi poll taxes. Buddhists Beg. Protestants specialise in Tithing; every religious institution constantly reinvents ways of screwing money from its membership.![]()
Billy Graham a cult leader? Now I have heard it all.
