It was something I was meant to try with a 'friend', although applied to the clitoral area. It apparently has a somewhat similar effect to toothpaste (which we did use a few occasions) - not something I'd recommend to anyone with a low pain threshold.

Have you ever eaten something with lots of Chili hot peppers in it, and then the next day you go in a private Hell when it comes to going to the toilet?

It feels pretty much like it. Burning/heat in your asshole that lasts for about 20 minutes.
Some find it enjoyable, actually. Many find it healthy.
As far as punishments go, unless you are allergic or have a special condition - it's a safe way to inflict a rather hard discomfort onto somebody.

p.s. you can put it in a pussy too.
p.p.s. And yes, it does provide similar sensations to toothpaste / hot sauce / Icy-hot and other things like that. Only, toothpaste is based on menthol, so you can find your sensations shift between very hot and really cold, especially if you blow air on that area. Hot sauce and ginger have another active element, and they basically just burn, with no cold sensations to it.

I have had a ginger root pushed into my ass on about five occasions. The last time the ginger root was bigger than I thought possible. Like a medium size plug. The burn is not insane but certainly noticeable and effect when accompanied with other pain stimulus.

There was a time when horse owners would apply ginger to the anus or vulva of their horse. The effect would be for the horse to carry its tail higher and appear more lively and youthful. Hence the term - "Gingering up".

This was also known as feauging - which is from where the modern word "figging" originates
