Being cheap I've never upgraded word 2003. For my limited use it works fine.

Question is will Lit accept the old doc styles. I know they say .doc but even I'll admit it pretty old.

File Type

a word document can be uploaded as long as it's extension is recognized. a file / document with an extension of '.doc' will be accepted regardless of what version of MSWord produced said document.

If memory serves, MSWord began to created word documents with a 'docx' extension when they rolled out Word 2007

If you're using word 2003, what version of Windows are you using? XP?

Dare I ask about your CPU?

I still save all of my documents in Word 2003. For Lit., I just cut and past from this to the submissions box and everything works out fine.

LOL Vista and 3gb ram with dual 2.2 ghz 32 bit 500 gig HD. Getting a little old now after 10 years but it's a workhorse and most of my work is on it. The word software was purchased on a computer previous to this one.

But I have a two year old Dell sitting behind me that I hate to use because it came with 8. Even the upgrade to windows 10 just isn't all that friendly. But the lack of internet browsers that work anymore is pushing me over to use it.

LOL another dinosaur in the crowd. Good to know. Thanks!

My husband is not cheap. He's thrifty. Almost a year ago he bought a new tower. They cost more and come with less. He bought the new Office program that wasn't cheap. The computer man at St*** told my husband he could install some free word program. My husband didn't like it.
Our oldest son finally put Word 2003 or maybe newer in his computer and three of ours. Yes we have three and only use this one.
My husband was adding stories as fast as he could type. Before we moved he stopped for some reason. Maybe it was his health.
So even though he now has one of the Word programs he hasn't added any more stories. Yet it's supposed to work on Lit.

Although I haven't edited books for mainstream publishers in a couple of years, up until then, there wasn't a mainstream publisher I worked for who hadn't stopped updating their computer systems at Word 2003. The publishing world was satisfied with that system and they agreed among themselves that they were irritated that they were expected to go to the expense of regearing every couple of years. So Word 2003 became the mutually compatible systems for moving between author and publisher. It just became a habit for me to step saves down to 97-2003.

I've used the same copy of Word 2000 since I swapped over from Works to Word. Lit has no problem with it, nor does my mainstream publisher.

I think that was the point with stopping at 97-2003. It accepted earlier programs. Updates after that didn't accept all earlier programs.

I have used LibreOffice for many years. You can download it for free. The entire suite, I use Writer and Calc costs nothing for the complete version. It works with Windows and Linux. I do not have a Mac so I can't help you there. It outputs in many different formats, so if you are sharing files with someone who needs a particular format it is probably doable.

Go to LibreOffice.org to download or learn more.
