Hmmm. Beautiful, but that's the kind of perfect neatness that makes me wary of thought experiments and purely theoretical physics.

But I do think it is beautiful that photons reverse the equation, as it were. It we could ever freeze one entirely, it would be massless, as I understand: all mass derived from speed.

One could say that photons always travel at the speed of light. When we talk about frozen light, slowing light by refraction etc., we are referring to the artifacts of light interacting with matter (or more generally, fields). And I agree about the hazards of thought experiments. Toy models by their nature are idealizations. But the photon box is a fun example that illustrates the mechanism of mass generation by confinement. Most of the mass of baryons (protons, neutrons, etc.) is from quark confinement, for example.

Agreed. There is altogether too much thinking outside the box at the moment. Let's at least explore everything the box has to offer first. Schrodinger's cat, waves/particles, Searle's Chinese box - boxes may be uncool but they're a vital, and cheap, cog in the scientific and philosophical machine.

For theoretical continuity of dynamic mass/matter/universal partical physics conjecture i like to hypothesise all the ‘boxes’ are Cylindrical tapering cones of various orientation and sometimes with potentially variable internal diameters. Just for shits and giggles.
