i will not pay to see the new star trek,
but i will view it.

nor did many people pay to see the mcgreggor v mayweather ... event
( edging out of bandwidth, many who did in fact pay ... the most ripped event in history)

the gambit by cbs all access is to gain viewer$ with discovery...
that $hip has long since... left the space dock:

or in all actuality...

failed ever to launch.

:::discuss:::

this is about politics and economics and realities and.... ?

don't forget to address your ethical footing as you... confess.

the very dynamic of viewing and viewership
has become ever more fluid
as the medium(s)/media become more the message than ever before...

cable cutting
ala carte packages
zero packages
rogue ripping...

bandwidth as the (only?) measurable fuel

certainly, content is not created of ether?

who/how pays?

the snowflake alt above pays for my discovery
(after 3 eps, it is still hard to call it star trek)

i subsidize nfl rippers by purchasing sunday ticket...

music has found streaming pay alternatives that are subscribed

is the new dynamic predicated by an almost 'assigned risk' pool of...
partial subscribers to selected content
- the pool of which...
covers the overall cost?

do you pay your fare share for the content you... take?

I pay.

I pay a lot.

But then we are using AT&T and DirectTV for phone, internet and TV. For us, cable is not an option.

I am one of those who shut off the NFL when Colin took a knee, the Cowboys could not support police and the owners/commissioner were in charge of.

;)

By the way, The Orville is the best version of Star Trek that has ever been created because it does not take itself that seriously. Everyone should check out its first three episodes...

as to the orville first;

i have been no great fan of seth mcfarlane...
but...
he is clearly a true fan of the original star trek
and has given this show all the grace and reverence that the original deserves...

that it punctuates the ethical/moral tales of 'wagon train to the stars'
with sometimes childish humor...
is...
greatly ok by me...

the asides/gags reflect our inner voice sarcasms upon watching tos
and... humanize what would otherwise seem... fantastic...

the show walks a fine line... exploiting human faults for their humor
without denigrating anyone... but perhaps mcfarlane himself...

i have, as an old trekkie, thoroughly enjoyed the orville...
i can only hope fox gives it the... space... to breathe...

seth mcfarlane gets a new lease from me...
he has not shat the bed on star trek...

he only has allowed us to watch it anew, with...
a good side of sophomoric human foible sarcasm...

(note also that one of the exec producers is brannon braga of tng, voyager, enterprise... et al... good hands)

as to discovery:

call it anything but star trek...

it is battelstar gallactica-ish
or... some kind of space opera...
something else...
but it has none of the look or feel of any of the canon...

i know and like people in and working on the show...
regardless, it feels leaden and self important
and too dependent upon shit exploding prettily...

star trek has always been story first and fx secondly...
not with discovery...

one more note on orville...

the matte painted planet scapes...
just as they did in shatner/kirk times...
it is quaint and reverential to... the original...
a sweet homage - without ever taking shot at the bones of what it had been
and it does work...

to the original point:
i think each of us, of an age, pay for our takings...
each in our own ways...

but the sustainability of such an "honor system" is...
tenuous,
in a world where the chase for the free
is almost as entertaining as the actual content...

and...
if one cannot get the content TODAY...
it is easily found/ripstreamed on another...
and binged at one's leisure...
viewing habits have been altered beyond
whatever we once knew...

and... as to paying for what is easily..."free"

well....

who is the fossil in this new equation?

I am that fossil.

Don't know if I should even bother with my free first episode that's recorded if the rest of it isn't worthy of hunting down.

I did enjoy The Orville. Seriously laughed out loud when the tree exploded through that one ship. He doesn't take himself seriously, and that's ok with me.

I'm glad that you "grok" the show.

I love it when he lampoons not only Star Trek, but Generations and the Matrix, among the many things he has already taken shots at including his lampooning of all of the Captains before who seemed to has no faults or human frailties...

He's a bit Liberal and preachy for my tastes, but so far, he's not really going over the top with the Social Justice aspect of his personal purview.

i do grok the orville

i positively abhor discovery

(4 ripped shows in... )
despite some interesting acting choices
and the relative simplicity with which any mutant can rip this...
'exclusive content'

i hope,
for all access' sake
that there is a contract once one dips their foot into this tar pit...

do i wanna see survivors or big brothers fuck for bucks and prestige...?
( during off network hours )
mayyyyyyyyybeeeeeee....?

do i wish to see a bastard show
under the mantle of at least two non-conforming universes
that respects neither
and feels like flash gordon?

fuck! i did love star trek.

not half an episode about a(n) ( unrecognizable as klingon, klingon)
whose name no one will ever remember...

nor can burnham"s adoptive parents be sarek and amanda.... conveniently...

nor can discovery,
between archer's enterprise and kirk's enterprise,
be the most innovative ship ever seen in the st universe.

i can almost watch a hamstrung jason isaacs peel decrepit wallpaper...
this show tests that proclamation...

THIS SHOW IS NOT STAR TREK.

it is an overblown something else...

the orville fits more into the canon than the newest namesake

glad i rip.

I don't mind paying for content. I work with bands and songwriters, they pay me money to have their records recorded, I charge if I go play gigs. I don't mind giving TV, movie and music makers money for what they've created.

Up until the newest release I've seen every Star Trek everything, own all the series and motion pictures.

Since the cast and crew of the newest ST went shooting their mouth off in support of social vengeance I've just decided to ignore the latest incarnation because the people making it are pieces of shit.

i get you.
i'm in the biz...
feel the same way...

but there is a breaking point.

cable - full access,
nfl sunday ticket.
premium internet.

amazon prime.
netflix.
et al...

i believe i pay a good healthy share
as many rip everything...

my point has to do with a show (discovery)
designed to necessitate yet another subscription
and as to whether, in fact, it is worthy?

i say it ain't, yet...

there are certain shows that can drive subscriptions
and certain shows that, by reputation, can generate such interest...

the start trek name alone...
and the drawn out premiere ( a year or so late)
was designed to create a pay network...

sorry charlie...

gambit underwhelming....

politics and social "awareness"
won't be this one's photon torpedo up the jeffries tube...

blind and selfish disregard for what preceded will.

kids 'boldly going' can be excused for becoming heady...
counting horta before they've hatched...
inexcusable...

curious as to what a fellow trekkie thinks about this incarnabomination?

Yea I've heard a lot of bad shit talk about the latest not being very trekkie.

Did they turn it into just another space action show?

I have worked odd hours for years. I honestly have very little idea what's out there as far as primetime goes. I did manage to catch most of the first episode of Oroville and liked what I saw.

In answer to your question RE: payment, I don't have reddit or any other service along those lines because, frankly, I'd never remember to watch it/them. So I stick with whatever I can find on cable when I'm home.

Do you think that
this is all about
folks that think they're
More clever than us?

An industry that's fallen back
on making movies out of 60's - 70's
TV series, almost devoid of anything
remotely approaching originality.

There's only two books one has to read.
The complete works of Shakespeare
and the Bible to become versed on
the various human conditions.

And if sitcom's is your choice
watch re-runs of "I Love Lucy."
Is it any wonder that the formulaic
bullshit out of the industry isn't gaining traction anymore?

There's always a show or movie somewhere that doesn't live in our "services." It sucks. I get your decision for a work around. I'm considering a web based only service, but I still prefer to have broadcast along with some streaming.

Getting BETTER!

Ishmael

Loved that book.

Took me forever to get through it.

Blast from the Past features a young man who was raised on Perry Como and The Honeymooners.

Is there any role that Christopher Walken can not pull off?

Such a snowflake.

blame the fcc
for destroying
network tv.

i will miss
the star trek
until it surfaces
on one of my
providers.

netflix wants
another buckamonth
in the name of
stranger things.
it's on autopilot.

being the first to
see something
for water cooler
discussion
is a thing of the
past.

i watch too much
tv anyway.

I watch a lot of...
"alternative" media.

This is how it works:
If I enjoy your entertainment,
I give you my money.

I can't tell you how many times I
bought a CD as a teen
to find out I only liked two of the 20 songs.

No longer will I give you my money first,
before I even know if you are worth it.

Legacy Media is dead.

i am thinking of ditching netflix for a while. trade in for hulu. i paid for hbo during game of thrones. i refuse to pay for CBS. fuck that.

it did take me too long to support my public radio station.

but i do now.
electro-tithings.

and...
i'm in full support of our disagreements;
...really good
with how we disagree.

entertainment is a pool that we pay for
from wherever it's ripped....

eventually.

i do not give a fuck about all access...
even more so now that the one capturing the story
head to head
works for ... "the union"... *somewhat spat*

Led Zeppelin owes me a lot of money. Vinyl, 8-track, cassette, CD, MP3...,

I never, ever once got grandfathered in as formats changed.

I should have become a pirate.
