...seems like a bit of a romantic way to describe a psychopathic mass killer.

Yep.

"Feral Pig" works much better far as I'm concerned.

PSYCHOPATH is a term misapplied to many.

What it means is: WHAT ARE YOUR LIMITS? HOW FLEXIBLE ARE YOU? HOW RIGID ARE YOU?

It aint a diagnosis.

...and once again

We will descend into an argument over the mass availability of firearms...

Which will inflame passions, insult the survivors, and nothing will change...

The definition of National insanity.

Naw, let's just talk about psychos. Humans are social critters. Anti-social humans are a danger. Let's make this particular psycho sex-crazy not kill-crazy because erotica. He's a standard fuck-em-and-forget-em guy. Then he meets one (any gender) who changes his life.

But maybe we want weird. He's fetish-crazy. Or sex-toy crazy. Or design-new-sex-toys crazy. Or hump-like-a-weasel crazy. Whatever. He's a loner. Obviously.

Gender-flip: How about the bitch lone-wolf -- what are her psychoses?

Almost every fucking movie I've seen come out of the U.S. glorifies the "lone wolf", the "maverick", the "rugged individual". Fuck Hemingway, fuck Ken Kesey. Fuck Cool Hand Luke, fuck Serpico, fuck Henry Fonda "standing up for the Truth" in the jury room. Americans believe that shit like it's real, and wind up with a psycho in charge.

Seems to me a number of nations have fallen for the toxic 'strongman' meme. It's not solely an Amerikkkan disease. Alas, strongmen are entertaining while good governance is boring. DJT is in the 'circus' component of the "bread and circus" ploy -- but he hasn't delivered the 'bread' part yet, i.e. no progress on jobs, prosperity, etc.

Difference: the 'mavericks' you cited above didn't grandstand with psychotic rants, didn't polarize, didn't blame scapegoats for their failings. Tromp does not fit the 'strongman' mold. Tromp fits the "braggart luzer" mold.

Now there's a fascinating one. There haven't been that many have there? And what would? The odd ones I've read about seem pretty weird but then they would be I guess.

toxic 'strongman' meme

That's unconnected with what I was saying, and is literally misleading.

The mindless equating of individualism with "good" is the point, which I think I made pretty clearly by citing those paragons of US virtue.

There's no way around the fact that new ideas come from individuals. A group might act on them and improve them, but it starts with an individual. In fact, the ideas to improve the original idea come from individuals in the group.

Also, many group projects get done because of the leadership of an individual.

Beyond that I agree with you. Many times the glorified individual is just someone who stood out by taking credit for what many others had made possible. We have a glaring example that the entire world recognizes.

I think the confusion comes from what you said in a later post. It's the mindless equating of individualism with "good" that is the problem.
