I've just been looking at the worldwide weather. (Yes, I'm a sad bastard at heart, I'm afraid.) Hurricane Harvey is looking more than a tad dangerous. Please take care, all of you Texans. Keep your heads down. Stay safe.

Amen to that, Sam

Thanks Sam but one thing, it is hard to tread water with your head down. ;) Everything in Texas is bigger, including the blowjobs.

I don't pray, but if I did, I would for all our Texan countrymen and women. My most fervent hopes are that you all come through intact, having gotten yourselves into a safe situation. Property is one thing, your lives are another. Good luck to all Texas.

It's the Texas Coast that's gonna take the pounding, but if that 3' of rain materializes, lots of the Coastal Plains for up to 80-100 miles inland will be flooded horribly.

More than 1000 people have drowned in late Monsoon flooding in India (Bihar state) and Bangladesh in the last week.

Australian media mentioned this as a footnote to reports that the first cricket match of the Oz tour of Bangladesh was cancelled due to"inclement weather."

Methinks that 1000 drowned Texans might attract a tad more attention. Hopefully that does not occur.

That three feet of rain will be spread out over five days, so we're talking 6-8 inches a day. That area runs off fairly well. There will be flooding but most of it will be fields, woods, and pastures.

The flooding that worries me the most is Houston and the surrounding area. That is where the majority of the major rain bands are training in off the gulf. Houston is like the fourth largest city in the US. Our local news is reporting 3-5 inches of rain an hour in these rain bands. Right now they just issued a major flood event warning for central and south central Houston from the latest rain band that still extends 50-100 miles out into the Gulf.

So far I've heard of no deaths and very few injuries. Luckily it hit on a Friday night and most people have stayed home so far. The problem is, we have another four to six days of the same thing.

Why don't they protect their people better?

The Ganges - Brahmaputra Delta is about 105,000 sq km -about 65% the size of Louisiana but with a population of about 140 million people. Dead flat, incredibly fertile, the combination of a heavy monsoon with snow melt from the Himalayas or high tides in the Bay of Bengal can be disastrous. And they get Hurricanes - in May this year for example.

In 1970 a combination of these factors led to the death of 500,000 people in one storm surge/flood. An incident where just 1000 are lost is a pretty average sort of year and there is very little that the very poor Bangladeshis and the relatively poor Indians can do about it.

A rise in sea level of some 45 cm would displace about 7 to 8 million Delta residents.

It would seem that my 'good luck' wishes were of limited value. :( Chins up, boys and girls. This too shall pass.

Thank goodness everybody is operating in superlative fashion. It's a tragedy that there are any fatalities, but only five thus far is a Godsend, and it is not over. My heart is with the loved ones of the five.

So, anyone in a flood zone in Houston?

There are a lot of roads closed because of flooding. I'm fortunate to be in an area that doesn't flood. And the rain just keeps coming. It stopped late last night long enough for the streets to dry out. Then it started again this morning.

So many warnings...on TV and coming over my cell phone. I had to put the phone on DND last night.

And they say two more days of this!

Who knows what is the latest news on Hurricane Harvey? Last I heard it was moving to Louisiana. My thoughts and prayers are with all in Texas and Louisiana. Be safe.:rose:

Last I heard, Harvey was giving Tennessee eight inches.

Information is as close as your internet connection. It's drifting north and east, very much reduced but still dumping a good amount of rain, and touching off tornado warnings. Flooding is receding in Texas, so things should stop getting worse soon, but thousands of people were displaced and the cleanup will be months to years. Hats off to Texans and their neighbors, who showed their usual resilience and neighborly concern.

Next up: Irma. No one knows where it's going to go yet, there's a lot of chaos in the models, but Haiti is not unlikely to have another unwanted deep cleaning, and that's unfortunate since they have problems holding on to topsoil as it is. Worst case, it gets deep into the warm bathwater of gulf and beefs up. But that doesn't seem likely right now.

It's you I was thinking of cowboy. Good to see your computer is still above the flood line. Just wanted to know you're safe. God be with those in trouble, I pray this doesn't turn into another Katrina, and He knows Haiti doesn't need another disaster. I pray Harvey moves into the Gulf and dies there. I feel for the guys in India and other Asian places as well. May the God of your choosing be with you all, and may all Lit's readers and writers come back to us safely.:rose::(

Sorry for asking, but aren't they all supposed to be male names this year, or do they alternate?

Alternate. Best of luck to our friends in Houston and other area hit by Harvey.

Amen to that.
My paper said that several 'celebrities' had donated a lot (millions of $ was mentioned)
but where does this money go and how does it get to those in need ?

The latest figures I've seen say over 100,000 homes were damaged or destroyed.

Money is coming in from everywhere. Most of it goes to the Red Cross, the food banks, churches, and other non-profit groups. NFL teams have donated close to four million and another million from the NFL owners association. The outpouring of money and materials is amazing.

I saw a thing that suggested a very Rich Pastor (worth a Lot) in his $10m house has not made any offers of help. Do let us know if he does or has please.

Death tolls from Floods in last 2 weeks

India 1170
Nepal 143
Bangladesh 140
Texas 45.

And?

I realize that this might be a minor thing here in Texas to you or that you are trying to put it in context with the rest of the world but this thread was started for the people here in the AH that might have been or are involved.
