I haven't heard it said in a long time, do people still say giving the bird for giving someone the finger? (at least in the U.S.)

Or am I just totally showing my age by asking that question? lol

I am a little older than you, but "flipping the bird " makes sense to me.

I did hear "flipping the bird" recently. (And I'm a number of years older than you) ;)
 
they are, but its sort of derogatory/ "airhead".

Not sure derogatory, maybe chauvinistic or misogynistic... as in: "Me and me bird went down the pub last night." Alternative to 'missus' or 'girl'... It's standard colloquial usage in some parts.
