What he did was foolish and stupid, but the reality is that his action is not responsible for their reaction. Their hatred was. And why did the cops sit by and do nothing? Would you expect that cops should stand by and watch people inflict their own vigilante justice just because you were acting stupid?

He mouthed off. They committed physical violence upon his body. The cops did nothing.

i understand the police warned both sides about protesting peacefully, but given the situation they needed to be prepared for outbreaks of violence. if police stood by and watched a citizen being physically attacked, then they were either incapable of doing their jobs OR obeying orders from higher up to not intervene in such incidents in case it made things kick off even worse before the rest of the police in operation there could don their protective gear.

the thing is, the police at hand should have been well briefed and alert/able to respond to individual acts of violence against members of the public.

if they failed to respond to the crime being committed because of this, they were negligent in their duties. it should have made no difference whatsoever on a professional level.
