USS Gerald Ford Commissioned

Why did it have to be named for the only man who pardoned a President? Now it's all Trump thinks about.

He longs for the day when he can pardon someone. And be all merciful and magnanimous. Certainly won't be to a political rival like a Democrat.

Did it trip or stumble going out of drydock?
I was going to ask if the Ford could walk and chew gum at the same time but you beat me to it. So I'll fall back on Fix Or Repair Daily. Or maybe Found On Road Dead.

Note that the name was chosen pre-Tromp, so that's one thing not to blame on him. Still, it's indicative; we probably won't see a Jimmy Carter carrier. But no Nixon carrier either. After Wee Willie croaks we may see a Clinton carrier, but not soon. Hmm, is there a site with prospective ship names? I'm too lazy to gargle that right now.

There is a USS Jimmy Carter, but it's a submarine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Jimmy_Carter

I should have checked. Thanks. Meanwhile, the sub-dudes have a saying:

Only two types of ships exist. Submarines, and targets.

I've seen analyses suggesting carriers are dinosaurs heading for extinction. Sure, carrier groups are nearly impenetrable -- except by a swarm of rocks or darts aimed from orbit. If it can be seen, it can be shot.

Nukes would work well against carrier task forces. You can mount them on torpedoes. They're not just for the strategic nuking of cities.

IIRC the screening around carrier groups would block most possible torpedoes. (Exception: beware the Straights of Hormuz.) A cloud of bright pebbles (titanium bolts) falling from orbit at escape velocity are rather harder to dodge or shield.

Good article here from Popular Mechanics (written last year) about how the aircraft carrier is becoming obsolete

Carriers have been declining in capability—modern carrier air wings are smaller and have a shorter striking range. Not insignificantly, an aircraft carrier packages 4,300 navy personnel into a single hull. The loss of a single carrier would be one of the deadliest days in American military history. At the same time, countries such as China are working to form "anti-access, area denial"—that is, no-go zones that are too dangerous for carriers to sail into, a problem exacerbated from the American perspective when the enemy's weapons have much longer ranges than yours.

A well-placed missile from some distance should pretty easily be able to disable/sink a floating island dependent on synchronized electronics to function. Lots of countries have missiles.

And, at the same time, fewer and fewer countries are willing to take U.S. floating island port calls. With Trump in charge, the list should dwindle quickly. Many only Murmansk and Vladivostok pretty soon.

I read it only cost $13 Billion to build. That would pay for a lot of MA in Women's studies graduates.

Whip up a scenario where all those grads magically fly over enemy territory and discharge precious bodily fluids upon the foes below. Then POTUS might get interested. Especially if they wear orange wigs.

I think as has already been mentioned, Trump bears no responsibility for this aircraft carrier. He came into the picture too late to do anything but attend the roll out party.
