2 Pastors V. Coca-Cola

"The background of this lawsuit is that there's an epidemic of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and a range of other degenerative diseases in the black and Latino communities, and really throughout America. For me, as a pastor, I see the toll it takes on families and children when they lose their parents much too soon," Delman Coates, the pastor at Mt. Ennon Baptist Church, in Clinton, Maryland, told CBS News.

Coke commercials often feature young, slender people gulping the fizzy beverage, smiling and sharing good times, but the pastors say those images are misleading. "Marketing for Coca-Cola is focused around health and fun and showing very sexy bodies in their advertising. You never see an obese person. If the people are consuming Coca-Cola at this rate, there is no way those bodies would look like that," said Lamar.

In addition to deceptive marketing, the lawsuit claims the soda maker and beverage trade association have "sought deceptively to switch the focus from sugar-sweetened beverages to inactivity as the key driver of obesity and related epidemics, including through their expenditure of hundreds of millions of dollars on research and programs that almost exclusively highlight exercise."

I think soda pop is garbage. I think it's doing horrendous damage to our health and our economy. I think the plastic packaging is an environmental travesty. I would love to see it vilified and thoroughly shunned by everyone. It's a truly wretched thing. And the chemical sugar free stuff? Worse. I'd really like to see some accountability for the absolute poison that their product is.

There were 40 years worth of private lawsuits against various tobacco companies before the states got involved and began their own lawsuits in the early mid 90s. In the 90s, about a third of the US adult population smoked. Now we are down to just under 17%.

More than two-thirds (68.8 percent) of adults are considered to be overweight or obese. More than one-third (35.7 percent) of adults are considered to be obese. More than 1 in 20 (6.3 percent) have extreme obesity. Almost 3 in 4 men (74 percent) are considered to be overweight or obese.

If the preachers were more effective in tending to their flocks then the pews wouldn't be full of fatsos.
That old-time religion means guiding wayward souls away from sin, including gluttony. If folks want to have three or four Cokes a week and otherwise take care of themselves, no harm done.

This may come across as me making excuses since I detest smoking but do indulge in the occasional pop, but a big difference is that there aren't any secondhand health effects from someone else drinking too much Coke, unless they lose control of the wheel trying to shove their Big Gulp back in the cupholder.

Coke and Canadian are in my glass right now. Otherwise, no pop, soda, or whatever.

But, there is a secondhand effect on your wallet.

The government could remove junk food/beverages from the eligible food list.

There is, the poor health and early demise of the morons who abuse it.

But, there is a secondhand effect on your wallet.

There shouldn't be and if we were doing things the American way there wouldn't be.

Make everyone pay for their own shit and quit trying to make every asshole's problem something EVERYONE has to pay for....problem solved.

The government could remove junk food/beverages from the eligible food list.

NO WAY!!!! They just want to levy huge taxes and regulations upon the beverage industry. ;)

Hello, you.

The problem arises when folks can't afford to pay their medical bills. That's a rrality that is not going to end. Believe me when I tell you that it costs you more personally when someone else doesn't have insurance whether it be through the ACA or somewhere else.

Governments haven't been able to get rid of tobacco. About the only weapon they have is hopefully ruinous taxation and regulation. What were the big tobacco company profits last year? Do you want your tax dollars supporting healthcare for people who are stupidly obese? Some cases of obesity can be linked to certain mental and physical issues. But the vast majority are just because I can. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

The cost of healthcare to motorcycle accident victims has been used as an argument FOR helmet laws. Why can't that be used for taxing heavily shitty food?

I'm all for helmet laws yet consider the IIHS the enemy.

Hi :)

No, the problem arises when you look at me and put a gun to my head to force me to pay my "fair share" of their medical bills.

And I wouldn't have that problem if everyone were simply responsible for their own shit.

Believe me when I tell you that it costs you more personally when someone else doesn't have insurance whether it be through the ACA or somewhere else.

Only because the government forces that cost upon me.

Causing black markets and the criminal elements surrounding them.

Because none of those taxes will ever go to pay for the HC for the people paying it. They will just vanish into the nether, and the government will price gouge everyone for beetus medication.

Hope as is well over there.

Everyone being responsible for their own healthcare expences would be ideal. Again, that is not the reality. It costs you more if they have no insurance than is does if they're insured.

Life is pretty sweet on the best coast

Hope life is treating you right as well.

It would be, and I see no reason not to go back to freedom.

Because M'aricuh.

If we went back to freedom....none of that shit would be problem for anyone except the people doing it to themselves.

You'll NEVER convince BB of that.

Things are going well, thank you.

Do you think there is any cost baked in to your insurance costs to cover the uninsured or underinsured?

Probably not, but he's not over the cliff and is capable of carrying on a reasonable debate.

You'll NEVER convince BB of that.

Except she doesn't have to because I believe her 100%.

I know it costs me.

Question is do you know why it cost me?

If the government didn't force it, I don't think it would.

I don't know.

I do know the prices have almost quadrupled since ACA came about, so fuck that piece of shit I'm glad the issue is being forced. Not that I expect much or any improvements from DC considering ACA was the best the (D)'s could manage.

I sign the check to the med insurance company once a month for our small firm. The premiums jumped after the ACA and have risen severely annually.

It costs you in terms of costs YOU pay to healthcare providers, not insurance companies, but the doctors, medical groups and hospitals who inflate their fees to make up for those without insurance who still need to be cared for. ERs take everyone who walks in. Knowing that there will be sometimes expensive bills that won't get paid, these institutions charge YOU and YOUR INSURANCE more to make up for what a retail outlet might call "shrinkage."

Canada, England and the rest of the developed world don't have that same pricing issue.

I do know that A NUMBER OF TIMES when I've tried to engage you (besides tonight) you've mostly defaulted to name calling so I stop talking to you.

Absolutely wouldn't be happening without the government forcing it.
