Aussies! Check in here!

Sorry to see the southerner's struggling with the cold... The struggle is real up here in Queensland too.

Hmmm, I've been to Melbourne a couple of times and always found it to be a fantastic place to visit. The only problem is the pompous inhabitants and their superiority complex. 😕

As with most things, its what you're used to. Some appreciate culture others don't. :D

Yep could show you a similar pic, however the water is fucking freezing here in the south then again no sharks, unless they're wearing jackets. Wonder is they pee in the water to warm themselves up on cold days?

Not sure about the infrastructure but Peter Dutton is from round here somewhere!:eek:

Well you have to take the good with the bad. Dutton will have a panic attack next year with the Comm Games, all those foreigners in the country just roaming around the place and some on boats.

Afternoon all,

Hope your week is going well where ever you are in this lovely country.

Organized a 90th birthday party for mum on the weekend. Four generations of the family attended so she enjoyed the day and we had cake. Thankfully the rain stayed away for the day. Wasn't expecting the venue to be so crowded with other people. Even though it is school holidays here in Melbourne, thought Sundays would be quieter.

Well the home rebuilds continue in my street. Another house was sold the other week so no doubt yet another double storey will go up which is all the rage these days. The tradies are doing good business in my neighbourhood and the local small businesses must be loving it. Surprised that these guys work Saturdays and even some Sundays. Might be a different story now with the change in penalty rates.

Anyone coming to Melbourne at the moment no doubt will see all the road works on the way from the airport and in the city at the moment. Still no movement on a train to the airport. Lots of opposition to that one mainly from industry. However the local govt is updating the urban train network, just have to wait ten yrs to use it. Something for the younger generation. Hey they won't be able to afford a house but have easier access to a train to look at stuff they can't afford.

The nbn has been in the neighbourhood for a few months. Not connected yet and in no hurry considering the drop dead date isn't till Aug next year. Good to know that when it's all completed it will need an update soon afterwards. Politics vs practical need and we're funding their goals not ours.

Evening, fellow Strayns!

Plastic Free July is in full swing down here in Launy.... I have so far successfully avoided a single piece of throwaway plastic! No bags, no straws, no disposable coffee cups, no glad wrap.....
My 20 yr old kidley bean thinks I am completely barmy.....but I am quite chuffed that I have managed this so easily :)
Saving the turtles, one person at a time!

Tonight will be our coldest so far.... expecting minus 4. I may not survive!

-6 here this morning (Central West NSW.) There was still ice on the rails of the sheep yards I was working in till 8.30am. Had to wimp out and grab some gloves...

Oooooooh! Last game of origin is tonight!

Exciting!

Predictions of who will win? NSW....but I hope I'm proven wrong. Just hope it's a good game.

Tough game again. Football has been the winner this series. Very little dirt, lots of sport.

Bye JT. Good innings bloke.

Let's hope he's not head honcho of some new 'Interior Ministry' or 'Homeland Security Dep't' by then... complete with very large cap and lots of gold coloured trimming... the full tin-pot dictator look

So, woolies and coles are banning plastic bags! Great, that's good news for the environment, right?!
WRONG!
What they are actually doing is banning all lightweight plastic bags and replacing them with thicker plastic bags that you will have to pay for!
Not only is this greenwashing at it's best, but these thicker bags cause just as much environmental damage.
We in Tassie have had this for a while now, and there is no conclusive proof that bag use has gone down in any significant way. In fact, it wasn't until very recently that the stores have provided recycling bins for these bags due to public pressure from aware consumers (they cannot go into your home recycle as they need specialised machinery to process!)
Tasmania has a massive problem with these thicker bags going to landfill.

So, is this bag ban a good thing? Well, yes! And, no.
Yes - because the thinner bags have traditionally been handed out in huge numbers, causing a massive waste and litter issue. Charging for thicker bags might make consumers more aware of how many they are taking home and discarding.
No - because they are still putting plastic into the waste stream, and many people simply cannot be bothered reusing them or forget to take them next time shopping.

In my opinion, both woolies and coles have missed a golden opportunity here. Both stores could have banned plastic bags completely and rebranded themselves as environmentally aware stores!
If places like Kenya can blanket ban plastic bags, surely Australia can do it too!?!
