I've been on for years as a reader, even submitted a story in 2011, but never explored the site until now. I can see how to send a PM, but I can't find anyplace that shows if I've received one.

The fact that you've got them turned off pretty much guarantees that you haven't.

1. Click on "User CP" (top left on my screen)
2. Click on Edit Options
3. Check "Enable Private Messaging" and save

I don't remember seeing any place to turn them on or off. The advice I was seeking is WHERE that place is. Thank you for your comment.
The UserCP link at the top left of any forum page has all of the controls for PMs. There, you can turn PMs on/off and select email, pop-up, both, or none for PM notifications

If you're logged in, there is a summary at the top right of every forum page, like so:
Welcome, Weird Harold.
You last visited: Today at 02:37 AM
Private Messages: Unread 0, Total 0.

The "Private Messages" text is a link to your PM inbox.
