Hello.

I am new to Literotica, and was hoping to find some advice and guidance about a writing project I have started. I am not sure if it would be fitting here, and if it is, where it would be appropriately submitted.

I also need some information on guidelines regarding violence and drug use.

What I am working on is a slightly fictionalized memoir. It will include a fair amount of erotic content, but will not be entirely erotica.

I foresee it being a multi-part series, tentatively titled "My Fall and Rise". In the first chapter, the narrator, a young woman, would be beginning a prison sentence after being involved in a terrible crime. Subsequent chapters would alternate between the story of how she got to that point in her life (My Fall) and how she rebuilt her life afterwards. (My Rise)

Is it possible to cross post a series of stories to different categories, yet have them remain accessible as a series? The first chapter would clearly be non-erotic, but others would be appropriate in a variety of erotic categories.

Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Melissa - Welcome!

Absolutely, you can write a single series and have it in multiple categories. Your series name will keep it together for readers so make sure your name stays the same with chapter one, chapter two etc at the end.

Good luck with your writing

I didn't ignore the part about drugs and violence as I really don't know. Honestly, I would check with Lovecraft68 on that as in his professional writing he can go down some pretty dark roads. I also find him easy to talk to and very helpful.

To the best of my knowledge there are no rules against describing drug use. You might get complaints from some readers - from previous stories it seems to be a hot-button issue for a few folk. But I've seen stories go through with people injecting heroin, etc. etc.

Violence: there is a line here though it's hard to describe. The main things to avoid are outright torture and snuff-type content; keep sex and murder separate unless you're writing in Erotic Horror.

Chapters: yes, you can post a chapter story across multiple categories, but there's some debate here about whether this is a good thing to do. There's a risk that you'll lose readers, because a lot of folk won't read all the categories, and people who've missed Chapter 1 may not want to read Chapter 2. Some authors have reported bad results from category-jumping, others have managed to hang on to their readers, so you'll have to make that call for yourself.

If you do go with multiple categories, probably best to work out the categorisation up front, and let readers know when and where the other chapters can be found.

The alternative is to pick a category that best fits the work as a whole, and post it there.

Thank you all for your advice.

I am not yet ready to start posting chapters, so I will look into this further before I begin.

To the best of my knowledge, the site's limitations on violence apply to violence during a sex act. I've not heard of limitations on other violence.

Some of my stories have violent scenes: the girl's insane boyfriend tries to cut off her hands with a hatchet, but her brother fights him off, and then the boyfriend shoots up the neighborhood; a character's stalker tries to kill her and her son, but he throws her down and takes the gun away; two gang bangers hunt down a girl and her brother to kill him, then rape and kill her--it doesn't work because the gang-bangers are attacked and killed by a cougar; in a love triangle, the woman is shot by her jilted lover, her husband takes him out with a shotgun, then kills himself.

Probably if the violence isn't sexual then you're free to include it, but I'm not sure about details. If you're writing the story for self therapy then you might think twice about including details--even if you need to write them. If it is sexual, then the site has rules.

Thank you for the information.

Writing about my experiences is certainly cathartic, but I would not characterize it as self therapy for me. Your advice seems sound, however, and I will be changing many details, for legal reasons, if nothing else.
