I'm sorry for what happened to Otto. It looks like his trip to North Korea was just a tour. It didn't look like it was some altruistic humanitarian trip. It's obvious to me that there should be a ban on all Americans traveling to North Korea.

I think there should be a total ban on Americans traveling to North Korea with severe penalties for those who violate it. With tensions building the NoKos will be grabbing any Americans they can as bargaining chips. Unfortunately the world has just let this North Korean problem continue and get worse, and now they have nukes and likely have the ability to deliver those nukes. Their human rights violations are horrific, as bad as anything the Nazis ever dreamed of, and yet they are allowed to get away with it. For decades we have said "China has to fix this". But that has failed, simply because China has no interest in solving the problem, and they actually benefit from the distraction that NK provides. Now I believe China, to their surprise, has realized they actually have no control over Kim Jung Un as he races to develop his nuclear and ICBM capabilities. I actually believe that the Russians may be behind some of these NK weapons advancements, which seem to be beyond their capabilities. But regardless, this situation with North Korea is reaching a boiling point. This can cant be kicked down the road any further. I think Kim's hold on power if not nearly as strong as his grandfather or his father's was and this is why he has been so radical and violent. Unfortunately, that makes him very very dangerous. I always believed the real danger of North Korea's nuclear program was that they would sell those weapons to other nations or terrorist groups for cash. But now I think it is not only possibly, but perhaps likely, that they will actually use one of those weapons themselves, perhaps on Seoul or more likely Japan. But as their missile technology has been advancing so rapidly lately, it becomes increasingly likely they may try to put one of those warheads inside the continental US. The consequences of any of those targets being hit is almost beyond comprehension. But I am increasingly afraid it may very well happen. This is something the UN should have addressed a long time ago, as they did in 1950. Unfortunately, that organization no longer really functions in any meaningful manner.

Not a very good idea to visit N. Korea as an American. Perhaps he did try to steal a propaganda poster. A genuine Kim poster would be a cool souvenir. Not a big deal in America. Get an American 15 years hard labour in the DPRK. And apparently a good systematic beating that doesn't leave any telling marks.
If you're some sort of proselyting Christian put your fate in Bog's hands and go. If a tourist you are actually supporting Kim's regime with hard currency.
You could ban US citizens from going there by saying it supports Kim's regime. But the CIA may actually like talking to returning visitors or insert it's own agents in under the disguise of being tourists. Wouldn't put it past them.
There is no legitimate reason to go to N. Korea. Attempting to Christianize the peasants will just get you made into a martyr. So there is that reason.

Of course we will never know what they did to Otto since they would never admit anything. Their story about sleeping pills and botulism has already been discounted by US physicians. I saw a report this morning where a doctor speculated that he may have been submerged in water and drowned. Nothing would surprise me. Hitler and Stalin have nothing on the Kims.

Apparently there's now going to be a waiver to sign acknowledging that you're going to get no support from the U.S. government in North Korea if you decide to go there and get in trouble. Think there already should have been waivers and lack of support.

His church, family, and congressmen rattled the cages of the area embassies to rescue him. Three soldiers died in rescuing him. Those deaths were on his stupidity and on those who demanded he be saved.
Make them sign waivers and then hold to them.
