No you didn't. You purposely conflated those mid-level bureaucrats with the national political leaders I was referring to. That was an atrocious crime against good Americans. But that circumstance isn't analogous to what I was referring to, and you knew that.

This is not that hard. Violence is wrong. Encouraging violence is wrong. It's wrong when random celebrity entertainers like Madonna do it, and it's wrong when US Senators like Rand Paul do it. It's dangerous and irresponsible. While group and social dynamics are certainly at play, for the most part, individuals who commit or incite violence are responsible for their own actions individually.

Separate but related is the climate of polarization and extremism. It's a problem for both sides, and both have a responsibility to either restrain or channel it before it becomes too destructive to manage. I think we are failing.

I understand your reluctance to accept the truth. Your adolescent behavior and foul mouth are two of the many reasons Trump is president. I would encourage you to stay the course not only through the 2018 midterms, but through 2020 when Trump is reelected.

I think that's fine, as far as it goes, but narrowing the scope of militia makes the distinction between a terrorist group and a militia a little more trivial. If we're referring specifically to the organized and unorganized militias defined by the Militia Act of 1903, then there is nothing in principle that prevents them from engaging in terrorism. And others have already made the case for destructive unorganized militias of American origin.

Militia extremists are recognized by the government (FBI):

What They Believe: A militia is a group of citizens who come together to protect the country, usually during an emergency. Some militia extremists, however, seek to violently attack or overthrow the U.S. government. Often calling themselves “patriots,” they believe the government has become corrupt, has overstepped its constitutional limits, or has not been able to protect the country against global dangers.

Who or What They Target: Violent militia extremists mainly target those they believe could violate their constitutional rights, such as police officers and judges. In one 2010 case, a Michigan militia group planned to kill a police officer and later attack the parade of cars in the funeral, hoping to start a large battle. That's a disingenuous distinction.

Domestic terrorism is terrorism, regardless of who is targeted. (For what it's worth, McVeigh wanted to target Janet Reno and the federal judge who presided over Branch Davidian compound trial.)

I am delighted! I hope your head swells so big that you're not able to fit out the door.

How are things in your world? I am settling into a new adventure - moved to San Francisco just over six months ago. I miss Toronto terribly and have had some difficulty adjusting to living in Donald Trump's America, but I also realized that I didn't even notice it was summer because the weather's so consistently perfect and I spent the weekend in wine country, so I think I'll manage :)

The militia is authorized under the US Constitution as well as by Congress. The use of lethal force against unarmed women and children is not.
