You sure do imagine a lot of things. Washington DC has long had a culture of anti gun and for years it was effectively illegal to possess one in public . Almost no public buildings can you walk into with the gun so most people in Washington DC are consequently unarmed.

The shooter, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, appears to be a Bernie Sanders fan. His Facebook page reads, "Democratic Socialism in Three Words: 'We the People.'"

I was under the impression that all of the people in those prices ZIP codes in are either over paid working for the government or overpaid extracting money from the government all of which is done in government buildings none of which allow you to bring a firearm in.

My state only recently passed sensible legislation that even allows employees to maintain firearms in their locked vehicles in a company parking lot.

Well, other than proximity, not much. Alexandria is about 2 miles from DC. Most of the population works in DC.

Interesting gun tidbits:

Va has a constitutional provision which protects the bearing of arms with some exceptions. So, open carry is legal, with some exceptions. One of those exceptions is that the city of Alexandria has banned the open carry of "assault rifles" unless the bearer also has a concealed carry license.

The shooter in this case is from Illinois. He probably didn't have the CHL permit. Yet, in spite of the law which says he cant do that, he did it anyway. Yep, gun control laws work just fine. If only we had a law prohibiting assault weapons in public. And some laws to make it illegal to shoot people would be nice too. With just those 2 laws, there'd be no more shooting like this.
