Texas is #1 . . . . . in pregnancy-related deaths

Texas likes to brag about it being number one, even though Alaska is bigger. However, it does lay claim to being number one for its maternal mortality rate in the U.S. Even one step further, the U.S. has the highest rate of maternal mortality than all other nations in the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development ) except for Mexico.

One would think this would be a high priority item on the Texas legislative agenda. From 2010 to 2012, the rate of maternal pregnancy-related deaths doubled. How can it be that in 2017, so many women are dying giving birth? What could be the cause or causes?

A bill had been put forth that would have extended the life of Texas' maternal mortality task force to 2023 from its current 2019 end date, allowing the committee of doctors and behavioral specialists to analyze more closely the specific causes of pregnancy-related deaths. However, because there was no movement on their pet issues, Republicans, backed by tea party supporters, used a House procedural maneuver to kill every bill on a legislative calendar that wasn't supposed to generate debate.

As they say, every life is precious, which is why abortion needs to be banned. But if the mother dies giving birth, meh, who cares. It's not that important.

No surprise. All those stupid TRAP laws shut down all but a handful of clinics.

Be on the look out for stories of death and harm from self induced abortions as well. They're on the rise in Texas.

I have a couple of buddies who took the maternity leave and became stay at home dads. Their wives made better money and had better benefits. Hardly makes them women.

'the U.S. has the highest rate of maternal mortality than all other nations in the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development ) except for Mexico.' - not a very good statistic!

One reason might be pregnant women sneaking into the US so their babies can be US citizens, therefore anchor babies. This is a stressful undertaking and might lead to the deaths of some of the women. This could be especially so if she had not been getting pre-natal care.

Of course, because those unwashed dark people don't know how to take care of themselves.

I doubt that you really think that is a reason ,when they have been closing down prenatal facilities .

I believe that's one reason. And, yes, I think it also probable that another is PG women getting "back alley abortions" because of a lack of proper facilities or gov. delays. That might very well be the biggest reason.

Texas not only lost the vast majority of abortion clinics and Planned Parenthood, but a lot of doctors in Southwestern Texas shut their doors because of poor to no Medicare reimbursements. This left a whole big region without adequate medical services.

If men gave birth, they would need somebody to protect them and give them resources while they took care of their offspring, which would make them a woman.

That appears to be Trump style logic. You better be careful or there maybe a grab for your pussy!

Nice attempt at deflection, but this article puts the timeframe for deaths smack dab in the middle of obama's reign. Abortion centers weren't in danger of closing clinics, they were rolling in taxpayer cash.

Thanks to the squabbling of politicians, they can't even discuss the bill for research and/or funding until the 2019 session. They must care so much.

You are so wrong it's not even funny. Conservative republican governor with a conservative republican led house.

It's fact. In the last ten years, there has been an aggressive and successful push from the evangelical right to legislate abortion clinics out of business.

clinics pre and post hb2

Thankfully it was overturned. But the damage has been done. There are and will continue to be more "homemade" abortions in Texas. The numbers will rise. For one reason only. Because (most - ha) conservative men don't trust women to make decisions about their bodies. And even those that do, still vote for politicians that don't. Period.

That is now, not covering the timeframe in the article. Besides, this probably won't make as much of an impact as you think. The abortion clinics are going away, but the places that actually provide prenatal care haven't moved. For the most part, PP encourages women to have their baby hoovered out, not helping the pregnant ladies stay healthy. For actual health care, PP refers the ladies to other clinics.

Nice try at deflection though.

What?!? Men don't trust women to make decisions about their bodies? That's why PP is in the crosshairs of the pro-life folks? No, just no. The biggest reasons are that they believe it's state-sanctioned murder of helpless babies. That, and it's being funded by taxpayers. If that's not enough, then PP also profits nicely from selling the pieces of said murdered babies to the highest bidder.

Sometimes abortions are needed because the child wouldn't survive being birthed, or because the mother's life is at risk. Almost ANY hospital can do this, PP isn't the only place in town. What I object to is having *my* tax dollars being used to pay for an abortion of Convenience.

If you're ignorant enough to think your federal tax dollars go to abortion then frankly it's very easy for me to assess that you are just parroting right wing talking points.

Hyde amendment. Look it up.

With only scanning the rest of your diatribe, perhaps you ought to do some studying up.

This garbage again? A fabricated lie.

There's this family I'm related to that's always short on cash. They are constantly having 'bad luck' and in need of assistance. In the past, I've helped pay their bills. You Know, to make sure the kids don't go hungry or to keep the power on or keep from getting evicted. I know my money is going directly to a bill, the gas tank, etc. It turns out that the "man" of the family was doing drugs, so that's where their money was going. I even helped out some after finding that info out even though I knew it was a bad thing, but those kids needed food and clothes.

Was I supporting his drug habit? Nope. I saw my cash directly affect the rest of the family; my cash didn't pay for his nose candy. Well, not directly anyway. But yes I was supporting that drug habit.

Pretty much the same thing for PP. By law, they can't use that half billion to pay for the specific act of killing the baby in the womb. Most of the time, women getting an abolition can't pay for it. For her, it's free. Guess where the money comes from? Fairies? Sure, they get private donations too, but that doesn't cover it all. Oh wait, they can't sell off the pieces of the tiny corpse, that's against the law.

I do not believe, for a split second, that they aren't using that free money to pay for the abortions. The money just doesn't go in a straight line.

Fungible.

Do you support the aid we give to Israel? Under the same bullshit logic, your tax dollars are being used to pay for abortion in Israel.

Have you actually seen the videos? I'm sorry they don't fit your narrative, but it's all there out in the open. PP is super pissed off that their secret is out.

If a former employee came out and just said those things, they could easily be silenced or made to look untrustworthy, but when multiple sources are shown, on video, it's really hard to ignore.

The truth is out there.

Omg that's not even close... I'd say 'nice try' but even that would be a lie.

We're obviously never going to change each other's minds on this topic, but maybe it was entertaining for the others on this forum thread.

The truth is that there is a medical market for fetal organ tissue, but nobody "profits nicely" from it.
