I know I've seen it mentioned how cool it would be if there was like a checklist to help decide what category a story should go into. That would really help me, I am forever second guessing myself. I usually just default and do EC.

But I am working on a story, an older one I started a few months ago, and I guess the main plot is this young guy early twenties and his eighteen year old girlfriend run away sort of because she's pregnant and is afraid to tell her mom.
To make money he answers ads from craigslist, older man seeking younger man, sort of thing. It's the fastest way he can think of to earn money.

Anyway because of this scenario should it automatically go in the Gay category? Yes there are sex scenes between the men in the story it's not just eluded to.

I know for me some things should go in certain categories so there is no surprise to the reader. Like I have zero interest in incest and would back away quickly at some surprise incest so I do appreciate if those stories are put in that category, I am assuming most people are ike me and don't like these kinds of surprises either.

Categories is only one of the many confounded issues on this complicated and holier than thou site.
Good luck buddy

The answer is yes. Gay Male is one of those " trump" categories, no insult to gay men intended. So is Incest, Noncon, and a couple of others.

This How To is a good guide, and short: https://www.literotica.com/s/love-your-readers-categories

You'll do a lot worse than read it. The information you want is in a subsection labeled 'Trump Categories' at the end, if you want to scroll through the rest. But I highly recommend the whole thing.

Yes, it goes in the Gay Male category.

That's what I figured. Thanks!

Now to find an editor. Since I've never written gay male stuff I don't want t submit it without someone else reading over it.

I thought instead of starting a new post I would just bump this one up since I have another question.

So I had a couple people look over this story and someone said yes while there is some GM sex, maybe it really belongs in non con because of the story.
It's about a young guy, don't worry he's early 20s, but he needs some money fast so he answers a craigslist ad. And while he's done it a couple other times, he's still really uncomfortable with the situation.
So the only sex is some awkward dick sucking.

So still GM?

Indeed...

I've been thinking the same thing for a couple years now. My personal work-around has been to list the different categories the story can fit into in its intro. So hopefully Readers will note the intro and proceed accordingly. —S

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, but for now I've decided this story is too much trouble. Needs too much editing, and I don't think it fits in any category without pissing someone off, so for now I've decided to say Fuck it!
:D

Most of the folks in the Noncon Category are primarily looking for hetero sex, so even if there is a lot of reluctance and coercion going on in your story, it'll still get a better reception in Gay Male. In fact, if you go into the Gay Male tags, you find that "noncon" is already listed. So, I'd just put it there with an Author's Note, to warn readers of the content, and properly tag it.

A different way of saying it is many people are either into GM sex or squicked by it, sometimes badly. Noncon probably amplifies the effect, but regardless, the simple answer is if two males are touching and things stick out as a result, it belongs in the GM category and nowhere else.

And here's another pointless plug for "Wouldn't it be nice if authors could fill out a lengthy series of checkmarks for what their story contains; and readers could set their preferences with the same list of checkmarks, and then we'd never need categories ever again."

I mean since I/m dreaming, readers would fill out a questionnaire on joining and whenever they liked thereafter, setting a "how much do you like X" on a scale of 0 to 10 for bunches of X. Authors would have the same list, but just apply present/absent checkmarks, or maybe a value from 0 to 2 (0=not present, 1=present but not the main point, 2=story is all about X)

And then a reader could say "Hey, Lit, find me some stories." The site would generate a list of stuff they hadn't read, and if they said for example they were a 5 on GM (take it or leave it), it would let in GM stories 50% of the time. If they set a 10 for Anal, only stories with Anal would appear in their list, and so on.

Readers would be free to go off the rails and look at whatever they liked, but in that case they couldn't leave public comments. Think of what that means for authors - anyone commenting on your story got there by previously admitting interest in your topics. LW would become a different planet...
